I had a similar problem on an older Kohler/Perkins and found it to be an open meter on the control panel. That circuit ran through the meter. It was a very cheap meter and it couldn't be read anyway due to it's position on the FC. So, I simply wired around the meter - problem solved.
Good luck.

I met Richard on the phone today....

He was a referral by a local big truck and bus drive train repair
facility.

He has a 1989 PT40 equipped with a Kohler/Yanmar 12.5 Gen.

Had some probs with the gen portion (not the engine) and replaced the
stator and some other stuff. The control box is original, including
the 3 relays.

Now that the install is complete, the yanmar won't continue to run.
Like a over-heat/low oil sensor shuts it down. The fuel shut off
solenoid is not staying in the run position.

Thats what I know from our conversations today. Ralph or someone, can
you help Richard with this issue?

Richard did not know of this site- does now. He has owned his Bird for
a few months now... survived a front tire blow-out on the way home!!!

Richard is a retired electrician and firefighter from Decatur, IL,
just 30 minutes from me...

Welcome to the wealth of information provided by this bunch of fellow
Bird lovers. This is were I cut my teeth 5 years ago.... the answers
all came from a Bird forum...

Thanks All!

One way to test if it is a fault with the shut down system and not
a correct responce from the shutdown system is to remove the wire
from the solenoid, hook it up to a horn, light or buzzer then jump
12V to the solenoid to get it started and running. once running the
horn should go off at the same time your engine was dying. The
genset will stay running this time because you now have the 'shut-
down system' only hooked to a horn and not the 'fuel shutoff
solenoid'. from here you can check that the fan comes on with the
120voltage, heat stays checked etc,,,. then you can wiggle wires,
and listen for the horn, Use a ground clamp from the battery and
make a new ground here and there, while waiting for a horn. Jump
around sensors, and listen for a horn. the horn will clue you in on
the fault issue.

Ralph, are you talking neutral and ground of the output of the
genset ac voltage?? you would think they should be bonded because
while running on 'genset produced ac voltage', there is no earth
path??

Greg: That is my point, they should be bonded, question was, did they?

Jay,

I see you have taken your PT-40 off the market. Someone missed out on
one nice bird. However, glad to see you will be staying in the family.

I wonder where the transfer switch parks while at rest?? does it connect the genset path or shore path to the bus panel ?? either way, once the genset is running, I guess he could test for continuity between ground and neutral to prove bonding. neutral should be the long slot and ground the round hole.

I hate working on gensetheads and inverters because their product only differs in watts from household AC. My "Poke at it till it works or smokes" method of repair is misplaced with the practice of electric.

glad your back
