brake assit for TOAD
Take a look at state laws. I believe most states are starting to
require braking systems on anything towed over 3000# (regardless of what
is towing it). Some lower some higher.

IF the state requires it and IF you get in an accident or lose your TOAD
or you look at someone cross-eyed, our country is known for suing one
another.

For less than $1500 it is good insurance.

We happen to tow a Yukon XL and so there is a difference in stopping
distance with the system verses without.

I realize that this is probably a "dumb" question. If the weight of
theTOAD is less than 10% of the weight of the coach, does one
reallyNEED auxilliary braking for a TOAD?

brake assit for TOAD
Depends upon what you consider "need". There are some states that
require brakes if the toad weight is as little as 1,000 lb. There are
some that have no requirement. Some are stated as a ratio of toad
weight to coach weight (or other similar terms). You never know when
some state is going to decide to start enforcing their laws as BC did a
few years ago. Besides having the extra braking available, I figure that
it is cheap insurance against a possible ticket or possibly having an
accident considered "my' fault because of non-compliance with the law.

As to suddenly enforcing laws, there has been precedence: BC as
mentioned above; WY suddenly enforcing the width laws: (most wide body
coaches are over width with the awnings.) And I hear that FL has
recently been weighing MH's in rest areas and ticketing those that are
over manufacturer's gross weight ratings. Being somewhat a devout
coward, I prefer to "try" to comply with the various laws. I know that
I am not 100% successful, but at least I do try.

Stephen has a great point. Check to see if the vehicle you want to
tow is compatible with the system you like. Unified, M&G, SMI are
all great systems. Not all have base plates that fit all vehicles.
