EMS 50C

Post: #21
EMS 50C
Bill you are giving some excellent and well needed advice. I was
just at a park in lake worth florida which had low power (98-105
volts) and could have used such a device.

However with that said it is important to get full use of the device
by installing the hardwired device in the correct place and that is
AFTER the transfer switch. Remember if the generator fails for some
reason and the EMS50 defaults you can still switch the transfer
switch to shore power. If the EMS50 is installed after the transfer
switch then it will offer its total capabilities to any power exiting
the transfer switch and going into the distribution panel.

Keep up the good detective work Bill. Now someone should detail with
pictures how to sucessfully install the EMS50 as bill suggests.

EMS 50C
Rob,
If you wire the EMS before the transfer switch, you have to choose
one input for the EMS (shore or generator or invertor). There are
multiple inputs into the transfer switch(es), but should only be one
output to the circuit breaker panel

So for instance if you choose to use the shore power input into the
EMS, generator and invertor are still available, but the coach is
not surge protected from the gen or invertor output.

If you install after the transfer switch, shore, gen, invertor power
introduction into the coach are all checked. I installed on the
shore cable just prior to the transfer switch due to easier install
location with my setup, and also to ensure the two transfer switches
are also protected from a shore power surge. I distrust the shore
power the most.

EMS 50C
Leroy,
The 136 second delay is to protect air conditioners that don't
have a built in delay. That way if there is a short power loss or if
the unit shuts down it will allow the AC to bleed the presure down
before starting the compressor. In the permanent surge protector
unit it is adjustable to a shorter setting if your AC units don't
require it.

EMS 50C
My mistype Dan. I installed mine after not before the transfer switch. I
guess my inverter does not go through the transfer switch. When on inverter
I do not get any reading on the EMS display. I do get readings while the gen
or shore power are selected.

Rob , then there must be a transfer switch for the inverter after the
shore - genset transfer switch and closer to the Wanderlodge power
fuse pannel?????

With all due respect, your input may be absolutely true.

However, I purchased my Surge Protector (that is how it was sold) for one
reason only. To protect against irregular park power, nothing more, nothing
less. . I would not expect it to inspect my power cord for defects or tell me
when my transfer switch is taking a &^%$. I do that. Of course, I cannot see
the connections at the transfer switch.

If I want to start my genset, and I do so twice monthly when plugged into shore
power, I turn off the pedestal breaker and pull the plug. I do not need to know
anything about frequency or depend on an instrument to do it for me. That is
all I am saying. I have been using the Portable for 2 years(about) and
everything is fine.

I know I am off the chart on some things, but it it ain't broke don't fix it. I
have had very good luck with it and until something changes, neither am I.

Frequency to me means how many times I get to walk from the pad to the cooler
for another Lite. LOL

Leroy,
The 136 second delay is to protect air conditioners that don't
have a built in delay. That way if there is a short power loss or if
the unit shuts down it will allow the AC to bleed the presure down
before starting the compressor. In the permanent surge protector
unit it is adjustable to a shorter setting if your AC units don't
require it.

Gregory,
On some older coaches the transfer switch is located within the inverter and
effects only selected circuits (outlets). Others, older coaches, the transfer
switch is outside the inverter but still only effect selected circuits. This
was because the older inverters could not carry the whole load and had to be
protected by selection.

As you said Leroy "With all due respect" then "however", I have had the
generator fail me and take out a new tv. Ernie had his plug fail and took out a
bunch of stuff for him just awhile back. In my case it ain't broke now and I
don't want it to become broke. Been there, done that.

Good luck.

Leroy,
The 136 second delay is to protect air conditioners that don't
have a built in delay. That way if there is a short power loss or if
the unit shuts down it will allow the AC to bleed the presure down
before starting the compressor. In the permanent surge protector
unit it is adjustable to a shorter setting if your AC units don't
require it.

EMS 50C
John,
As I stated earlier you can take the portable PT50C over to the electric
receptacle outlet and check the condition of the current and outlet before
pulling in the site. You don't have to pull into the site get out you cord plug
it in go back in the coach and check the hard wired monitor. Also the Portable
comes with a lockable strap so the monitor is secured to the post. To each his
own.
