Garmin vs Magellan
George, Having owned both a Magellan Roadmate and Garmin
Nuvi 350, my opinion is the Garmin hands down. It is small enough to fit in your shirt pocket, works great walking around downtown, good battery while not plugged in. All units come with a learning curve, bit the Garmin was more intuitive than the Magellan for me and my wife too. We tried to get updates from Mag several times but they were never available. The Garmin will remind you after a year to check for updates. We just updated our Garmin and are ready to for another year or two. You didn't say whether you have a GPS now or not, but they are like cell phones, you'll wonder what you ever did before you had one.Happy shopping. Bill Helland 95 BMC 37 Humboldt, IL |

You might also want to check out TomTom. I had a Street Pilot that came with the bus and it was TERRIBLE. Very hard to program some street locations. The Garmin 476 that I took off our boat is much better, but the TomTom is by far the easiest to program, carry with and use. If you have a Mac, be prepared to struggle with updates. A PC is much easier.

Garmin vs Magellan
Indeed ... part of my frustration with updating my Magellan is that I
had to borrow a friend's PC to do it (as I have an all-Mac household). To make matters worse, the printed material doesn't mention that you need an "authorization number" off the invoice to proceed with the update installation. I had to drive 35 miles round trip to go back home to get the #$%@ invoice when the program asked for the data. (Of course, the Magellan (no) support line couldn't help.) The update procedure itself, takes a couple of hours -- and naturally, it stops a couple of times to ask a question. For a lengthy upgrade procedure, you'd think they'd be smart enough to program it to ask all the questions up front so you can leave it unattended while it works.
