Jetta TDI as Toad and daily Driver

Well I made a plunge into a 2000 Jetta TDI
5 speed manual (Turbo Diesel) to setup as
my Toad in place of the LandRover that was
costing me too much to keep running (that
is a different story).

With the first tank of diesel consumed in my
2000 Jetta TDI, to my delight I got 45.6 MPG
and I was driving mostly in the city with AC
running. On the open road, I would expect
over 50 mpg since Volkswagen claims
30 city / 45 hiway. With my annual mileage
of 18000 I will be saving over $1700 per year
in Fuel cost over the cost of driving the
LandRover. I can definitely use the $$$ to
keep my Bird on the road as retirement days
approach.

My question to the Team is:

Is there a simple way to transfer around 10
gallons at a time from my 265 gallon Wanderlodge
to my Jetta ? This would allow me to buy diesel
when price is lower and help keep my Wanderlodge
Diesel in a fresher state.

I did a quick web search and found

Hand operated Fuel Transfer Pump for $32. Is
this what you have seen in your travels with
a diesel Toad ?? What sort of MPG do you
get with your Liberty. I know the Jeep Liverty
is alot larger Toad than my Jetta.

That pump should work fine,although it may take a while to pump 15 gallons
or so.
If you want a little more volume,you should look for a larger pump.
We don't have enough miles on the Liberty to judge mileage,but we have seen
24 mpg so far (they claim 27 mpg), a lot different than the 16 mpg we got
with the Grand Cherokee.

Good choice for the Jetta. I've been thinking of getting one for just a
daily driver here. As for transferring fuel, I would think the quickest and most
flexible way would be to get an aftermarket cheap electric fuel pump, attach a
hose and feed it down your filler tube. Hook it to 12Volts (possibly w/ jumper
cables?) and let 'er rip. Not sure how long it would take to fill it up, though.
That would depend on the size of the pump. This way you wouldn't have to mount a
separate tank. However, if you're looking for a more permanent installation, let
the other guys recommend something.
Have your seen the veggie oil conversion kits they're selling for small
cars and motorhomes now? Check it out at http://www.greasecar.com . I've seen a few
they've made for big motorcoaches with 100 gallon tanks for holding the oil.

Another website I found that is for a company in the
local Seattle area that promotes BioDiesel use is
http://www.greencarco.com/ I dream of getting a
second VW TDI but this time make it a New Beetle
with the advantage of wide entry doors for this wide
body of mine.

But to keep this Post related to the Wanderlodge....
I will thank you for the tip about the electric fuel
pump to add to the BlueBird Fuel system. I would
like to really see if way to make fool-proof to use
with a hose out the side of the BlueBird that I can
just park the Toad Vehicle next to and pump away.
If convenient to use then I will more likely use
the fuel transfer system.

You might consider setting up some kind of filter with the pump,
there is the possibility of picking up debris from the steel tank in
bird. Mine seems to have rusticles in the neck of the tank, I
wouldn't want that in my new VW. I don't know if the filter system is
as forgiving as in the bird.

Well, Dave, I had a setup similar to what you are asking, but I did it
backwards. (Seems like I do a lot of things this way, according to my
Wife)!
My Toad is a Jeep CJ model. I replaced the mechanical pump with an
electric, and then added a second electric pump in the rear, near the
tank. I ran a rubber gas hose from the front fuel pump to the carb.
One day when the Bird was empty, I simply pulled the Jeep alongside,
and unhooked the gas hose from the carb, and stuck it into the Birds
tank, and turned the key on. (I can do this because our Bird has that
mighty 391 Ford engine)! This takes a few minuits, but I usually have
a few things to do anyway.
But you get the idea, In fact, put a "T: in the Birds fuel line with
a valve and hose to fuel up the VW. This is assuming your Bird has a
simple fuel setup like my Jeep..

Another great idea.

Seems like the "T: in the Birds fuel line with
a valve and hose to fuel up the VW" should work
well and does not require much cost.

I will ask the repair shop that does my LOFF (Lube
Oil Filters) about this option next time I go in
for a LOFF.
