I just put my ear right up to the fill and listen as it fills. You'll have
plenty of warning and no burp.

Right on Brother. I'm glad you said that. I estimate how much I am going to buy and when it gets to about 3/4 of that amount I reduce the flow to a smaller amount and that seems to work for me. I still open both fills though. West Marine carries a overflow suppresser which is a circular bag filled with (what?) that fits over the nozzle and absorbs splash. I guess a towel would work as well and cost less. I keep my supresser in a zip-lock in the fuel compartment. Also, as with many things, slow is good. We have metal tube with a larger lip that fits in the fill that will keep the fuel from splashing out. The people we got our Bird from got it and I have seen it on one of the forums. It works great just keep a rag closejust in case.

I bought a couple of those things from West Marine -- and the first "burp" I encountered while using one was well controlled. However, the burp was so significant that I decided that I really didn't want to store the well-soaked "containment ring" and run the risk of spontaneous combustion in the storage compartment. So, I tossed it in the trash barrel by the pump. At $1 each, I quickly decided that scrap rags (which after years and years, I have collected a ton of old towels to tear up) were the lower cost option.

The "containment rings" fulfill a legal requirement for boaters to avoid fuel spillage into the water, but aren't a requirement for our "land yachts" so far.

With a 2000 unit, you may have an improved venting system. It's amazing (to me) that Blue Bird took so long to improve the venting to better control the issue as it's pretty common for more than 20 years of the production...

I, of course, would listen -- and pay attention to the amount filled vs. my estimate of need, etc. However, I was reluctant to open the cap on the opposite side, as I could too easily imagine a stream of fuel pouring out with the auto-shut off not activating...
