Locking Tag Axle Tire
I LOCKED UP A PASSENGER SIDE TAG BRAKE THE OTHER DAY. WILL BE INTERESTING
TO SEE WHAT YOU FIND OUT. I WAS TOLD THAT THE LOADING ON THE TAG MAY NOT BE
PROPER, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ADJUST THAT. SOMETHING TO DO WITH "RAISING OR
LOWERING" THE TAG AXLE, I WAS TOLD,,, MAYBE ADJUSTING THE DRIVE AXLE
HEIGHT??? DAY, IN SUNNY JAX FL, 83 PT-40

First post reading for years. Have had a tag axle, drivers side,
that locks on hard braking. Many corrective actions taken. Started
by replacing leaking oil seal and brakes that wheel. Adjusted slack
adjusters myself and also local truck shop. At Bennie???
recommendation at Bluebird hooked up guages to each line going to
each tag axle wheel. Thought had found problem approximately 10#
difference, BUT switched gauges and found that the guages had a 10#
difference. Guages actually show air pressures to each side very
close. Truck mechanic thinks it could be warped brake drum, but
it has not been noticed when other repairs made. Before taking off
wheel and drum again, I though that I would seek help from past
experiences on forum.

Rex: It would not be real unusual for the tag brake's to lock up
during a HARD brake situation. WhatI would want to do next is to make
sure that Iam getting full down pressure (bag inflation) on the left
side. Have you weighed the coach to see how light the left side is
(depends on inside configuration). What are you running for TAG
pressure on you guage ?....Bob 93pt

check to make sure that both air lines are the same length.if one has been
replaced it may be shorter or longer.it does matter..Tom? randydupree93wb

Locking Tag Axle Tire
I'm surprised that only one locks on hard braking. The reason this
occurs is because you get a major weight shift to the front axle which
unloads the tag. The fact that only one is locking simply means the
two are not adjusted the same.

I need to clarify my last post to you. I assumed you are talking
about an emergency stop. If not, then I would look at what Bob and
Randy recommended.

Randy unless the law of physics has changed since I retired 10 years ago a
difference in 1/4" air line lengths of a few feet will not make a
difference in the force that the brake chamber applies to the slack
adjuster.. I would suspect that if one tire is locking up then I would
suspect contaminated brake shoes on that axel or a misadjusted slack adjuster.

Hi Rex,

I don't want to confuse your issue but want to relay
an experience from an 86PT40 in about 1987-88 when a
hard braking incident "blew" (exploded) the curbside
drive and tag axle drums, tires etc. and separated the
tag. Was fortunate to be towed "after hours" to a
large International Truck/bus shop in Hickory, NC
where current maint Chief was a retired (after 30+
yrs) maint Chief with Greyhound Bus. In spite of my
protestations, the shop guard called Chief, at home,
late Sat night. First thing Chief asked was, if I had
previously experienced any unusual single tire
lockups? I couldn't recall any.

He came in early Sun morn, took one look, said he'd
bet a weeks pay on defective drums produced from 82
thru 86 (or thereabouts). While we waited for BB to
air freight lots of parts, he had my four "remaining"
drums (the other two were somewhere along I-40's Black
Mountain) pulled and inspected. Guess what???
Although I never understood the connection, he refused
to believe I hadn't experienced lock up problems and
claimed he'd seen hundreds in his years with
Greyhound.

This experience might not have any bearing on your
situation, but sharing potentially helpful info is one
purpose for this great Forum.

I would also look at the cams if they get overly worn they can lock your braks
up.What happens is they rotate a little to far and not release

THE LENGTH ON THE INJECTOR LINES ARE PRECISE DUE TO THE TIMING FOR THE
FUEL TO BE INJECTED INTO THE CYLINDER AT A PRECISE TIME. (WHICH OF COURSE YOU
KNEW)
THE LENGTH OF THE AIR LINES ARE NOT PRECISE FOR "TIMING" BECAUSE AIR
PRESSURE SHOULD BE EQUAL THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH OF THE LINES. ALL BRAKES ARE
SUPPOSED TO APPLY AT THE SAME TIME. THE LEFT SIDE DOES NOT APPLY BEFORE THE
RIGHT SIDE. THE AIR PRESSURE WILL BE THE SAME AT ALL POINTS THROUGHOUT THE LINE.
IF A DIFFERENCE DOES OCCUR, IT WILL BE DUE TO OBSTRUCTIONS, RESTRICTIONS, OR
SOME OTHER PROBLEM. DAY JAX FLA 83 PT-40.
