Generator tray re-model

Has anyone ripped out the big generator and replaced it with some
combination of a smaller generator, 2nd battery set, converter and
solar panels.

I'm figuring a 3kw generator, 5-600aH battery bank, appropriate
converter/charger and solar panels would be really user friendly.

Has anyone done this or something similar? Are you happy w/ what you
did?

I haven't done it yet, but I'm definitely going to...

I'm leaning towards a generator with just enough juice to start one AC unit, and
then about 1000 to 1500 AH of batteries, maybe even LiPoly batteries if they

come down a little (in which case it would be more like 3000AH)

I haven’t removed the Kohlar, but we do carry a Small (2800w) Honda. I first carried it because we get into some pretty cold weather dry camping and I was concerned about getting the diesels started in really cold weather. We have ended up using it other times to bring the batteries back up or for Kathy’s morning coffee when camping. It will run the microwave and water heater, or two of the block heaters, or one ac unit. I have a 7500w unit that I use when I have the Kohlar out. It will run everything.

Gary - I have done what you suggest, except that the FC31 had a smaller
7.5KW genset to start with that is still in place. The new system has
dual split/dual batteries for house and engine, smart chargers, AM
Solar charging, a 'modified sine wave' inverter for the galley, and a
smaller 'true sine wave' inverter for computers and entertainment
electronics in the front salon.

Very pleased with the results so far. The 200W solar system seems
adequate for our needs but many find a 400W system more suitable.
