Question about repowering early PT's

Question about repowering early PT's
I think the complexities of repowering an 8v92 with a Series 60 would
hardly be easy. Remember too, that you'll need a different
transmission adaptor, etc. There must have been some reason (other
than giving more space inside) that BB went from 40 to 42' when they
installed the Series 60... I also note that the S-60 sits higher than
the 8v92, so while the approximate dimensions are the same, the
relative position of the output shaft puts the top of the Series 60
into the bottom of the rear closet (or mattress). Also, doesn't the
S-60 rotate in the opposite direction from the 8v92? If so, it might
require a new transmission and/or differential -- or some other
'trick' like flipping the drive axle upside down. In any event, a lot
of fabrication!

Anyway, the question was to swap a 6v92 for an 8v92 -- increasing
from (around) 300 to 450-500 HP (depending on the 8v92 used). An 8v92
for a Series 60 would trade about 500 HP for about 500 HP -- so
there's no difference in the HP and there's little justification for
the project.

Honestly, the best suggestion is simply to 'trade up' the 6v92
engined PT to one that already has an 8v92.

Question about repowering early PT's
Ernie,
You are right again.
I am the proud owner of one of the 6V92 "Red Block" turtles.
Early in our Wanderlodge experiences, I was shooting the breeze with
the service guys at Williams Detroit/Allison about possible power
upgrades. They said that the 8V was too long so that it was not an
option in my coach. I would assume that the Silver block is a
potential since they were both offered as an option in the 82/early
83's and the Silver was upgraded w/DDEC in later years. Some of these
engines were rated at 375-400 in trucks (and 450-500 in marine use 8-).
The guys at Williams were concerned about the ability of the
transmission to take any big increase in HP/torque ratings so that
would have to resolved.
I agree with the sentiments stated earlier, if you don't think you
would like living in the truck lanes of America, you would be better
off getting a coach with the 8V especially if you are going to pull
anything.

Our 77FC35 does a stately 35MPH or so up most moderate hills, just gives us more time to appreciate the scenery Smile

Question about repowering early PT's
I was out and about in "The Big Napper" over the weekend. From
Shippensburg to Ridgeway and back. I crossed every hill and valley
in Pa and back. I was lookin everywhere for a couple extra HP. It's
stately alright until you drive buy a deer carcass. Which I did once
and any number of dead skunks. I was grateful that I got there and
back with no problems and with reasonable fuel mileage, but I gotta
tell ya if there was a practical way to get another 100 hp I'd be on
the short list. Not bitchin because for the most part the ole girl
does pretty darned well but there are times...

Question about repowering early PT's
Yeah, I've been thinking about an electric vehicle toad that could be remote controlled to help push the bus up hills and then do regenerative braking on the downhill side to recharge Smile

Question about repowering early PT's
Hummm, You got me thinkin. Have the wife ride in the toad and
starterup and push as needed. I can hear it over the CB now. Ok
honey gunner now just keep your hands off the wheel !!! You want to
bet some one has tried that all ready? I can see Ethel and Emma (the
dog) riding back there now. I can talk my wife into just about
anything (as long as I take her out for dinner as part of the
bargain) wonder if she'd "go" for that one? If I could keep a
straight face I'd love to see how far into that we get before she'd
freak out. I am right now in the process of getting a toad set up so
it would be the time. Or I could tell her I have a positronic
regenerative rotating pusher motor under that toad which she needs to
monitor while towing. I do have to keep in mind that they get even.
Shane and I are going down to NJ this Friday to look at bus seats.
I'll get him in on this and we have about a eight hour drive, we
should be able to come up with a good one in that time.
