Detroit 6V92 High Idle
Hi everybody. I been here a long time but just read, generally. Been
runnin' Birds since '94, on our 3rd now, an '83 PT35 that we've had
for a little over 11 years. My high idle doesn't seem to want to kick
in when I throw the switch. It over-rides the foot throttle, as
normal, but only increases rpm by maybe 50. Definitely not normal.
When High Idle is off the foot throttle seems normal. Since I live in
NV I never use the cruise and, as far as I know, all of the original
parts are still in the system. Could that be part of the problem?

Hi Dennis:

Your high idle and cruise are separate systems. Since your rpm's are
increasing, it sounds like the transducer in the rear is loose.

Open the engine compartment and while facing the 6v on your peft side of
the engine, up high on the side of a grey/silver box, you should see a
round cylinder about the size of your finger and it will be partially
behind the turbo exhaust tube. That is the transducer at the end run of the
high idle. See if it is loose. If it is, start the Coach and adjust for the
proper high idle rpm (between 750 and 1000 rpm?) Inside the transducer (
small cylinder) is a plunger that goes in against a bell crank to raise the
rpm's, that bell crank and or plunger can and does get worn.

Thanks, Ralph. I'll take a look at that and let you know. Nice to
talk to you. I followed you through Camping World's University. I
only took several modules, but enjoyed those courses enormously. I
have followed your activities on this site for quite some time and am
very glad you are well and everything seems to be going well for you.

Dennis, I am not positive, it may have been a BB add on to the 6 and 8 v's.
The Allen Air metered air valve that the high idle switch activates is
normally closed electrically held open and send metered air to that
transducer/cylinder. I know you can't miss it when you look to the left of
center up on the frontish side going into an enclosed part of the engine.
