Replace stock '92 inveter with Xantrex RS2000 OR RS3000?
My converters are old and on their last leg. Since I am going to put
in 8 new AGM's soon I want to start them on a proper charging
routine. The cost to replace the chargers will get me almost half way
to the cost of a refurbed Xantrex RS2000 or for a little more an
RS3000. An additional advantage to replacing the Inveter & Converter
solution currently in the coach with a new inverter is having one with
Auto Gen Start function for battery charging or Thermostat control
(travel with pets).

Now the question, since our coaches have a Heart 2000watt inverter, I
would assume converting to a 3000watt inverter would require
additional work such as an additional circuit to the breaker panel, or
at least replacing breakers? Has anyone done this conversion?

My past includes having been a mechanic and electrician, so no worries
there, just need to understand how large this job would be to go to a
3000watt (assume the 2000watt is basically a rip and replace)?

If I have to replace the transfer switch to complete this I will just
stay with a 2000W unit.

I changed out the Heart with a 3000 Xantrex and the only hard part was wiring
up the remote panel. They did not change any breakers at all. When the Heart
crapped out in Alaska, I could not find anyone to install the Xantrex and I
swapped them out myself in about 30 minutes. I did not get the remote hooked up
until I got back down to the lower 48.

Interesting Tom. Could you tell us more about the remote panel. Were you
able to use the existing wiring? Did you put the remote in the same location
(ie left of drivers seat)?

Replace stock '92 inveter with Xantrex RS2000 OR RS3000?
I will state upfront I am not familiar with the '92 setup but I did
replace both Heart 2500's last year in my 42' '95. So I will share
that experience so you may "use/ adapt what you can" to apply to your
situation.
Both 2500's were shot..... I searched and search, metal debate for at
least a month, rebuild, upgrade to full sign wave, more power like the
3000 tim the tool man taylor...., buy new or rebuilds.....etc on and
on. I have the bus skematics and was talking with Bennie who was at
the time, customer service before he was promoted. Looked at the
breakers, wiring etc. I determined that the house "wiring" in the
coach minus new CB's would be fine for the bigger units. I determined
the wiring to the inverters from the old 25oo's to the batteries and
CB's was not. Sure I could have a local company built me new cables to
the 3000 zantrex specs/ others specs I gleened online from their
website manuals, new cb's, etc. no problem.
In then end, being ulta conservative and anal retentive about
electricity, I went with new Zantrx 2500's..... found the best price
on the internet, got free shipping, ordered new remote
panels.......push/ pull, no issues, done, 1-1/2 years later happy camper.
- in the 95 the inverters/ converter are mounted in a "box" above the
batteries, 96 and beyond, they moved them to a curb side compartment
to protect them from road dirt, etc. So I remounted not wanting to mess
with coach wiring and just clean them frquently. It was fun "drilling"
the new monting holes laying on your back with hot metal shaving
falling everywhere and on your face, pushing house battery trays out
of your way, etc. I should have went to the local el chepo tool place
and for 15 bucks bought a drill 90' offset and did it right side up,
otherewise the 2 fit fine in the old space with the required "air
space" . That was the other problem I had in addition to the above, I
could not find upgraded units of any brand to "fit" in the required
"box" above the battery properly with air space.
- the old heart 2500's came with the heavy battery cable, the Zantrex
do not, however you can take apart the hearts and reuse the cable, all
you have to do is "enlarge" the mounting hole and the spade lug was
large enough. The old cables we also in good shape and met the zantrex
specs.
- be careful, you a dealing with tons of amps when you hook up the new
unit, plenty of warning in the install instructions.. certain steps in
certain order and no, my heart did not need a jump start so I did it
very slowly and carefully after my morning coffee when I was awake and
not stressed, wraped the wrenches in insulation in case I was sloppy,
dropped them, etc. covered the batteries with blankets, did the best I
could so if "old and sloppy" slipped, I did not fry myself.
Good luck, others will offer their views, so consider this just 1
conservative perspective who is chicken!

Peter I certainly qualify for the terms "electrically challenged" but
couldn't you have completed the job without any worrry of being
electrocuted? Disconnected batteries etc?????

ROOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBB!
In a word, NO. The optional electical distribution panel where the 2
inverters/ converters connect to is in the the curb side engine
compartment, where 3 engine and 2 of the 6 house batteries reside.
Also the "ditrubtion" conections for a 6 house batteries, both + and -
reside in close proximity to where you need to hook up the 2 + & -
inverter /converter cables. unhooking them in the "engine room" does
nothing..... the battery + & - poles are still exposed for clumsy
over here to drop the wrench on / touch, and the other 4 house
batties are still live. unhooking all 9 batteeries was a waste of
time............ cover with a blanket, wrap tools in insulation and
electrical tape....... make the sign of the cross, genuflec, ........done
Also forgot to add you do need new remote panels for the zantrex as
the heart ones will not work but the wiring is the same so it is 4
screws and you are done. Heart sold the company and design to another
company who then sold to zantrex, so in effect, the upgraded
replacement to the oringal equipment, same power that I had.

Replace stock '92 inveter with Xantrex RS2000 OR RS3000?
My coach is at the body shop being repaired, so I can not rip the
inverter out or recall what the breaker panel setup is for the Heart
2000 that is in there now. I assume the '92 and '93 are basically the
same setup. I have a battery compartment with 8 gel cells and above
that I have a enclosed box with a door which contains two older style
IOTA converters and the Heart inverter. I have had the inverter out
before so I could pull the converters, but can not recall what the AC
input and output hookup was like.

You say you did the swap in 30 minutes without the new control panel.
Since I can not recall, I would assume since the old unit is 2000watt
that Bluebird did it with a single AC output connection from the
inverter to a 20AMP breaker in the breaker panel?

In your swap did you just hook up one side of the AC output from the
RS3000, or does it require both AC output phases be attached to the
breaker panel?

Replace stock '92 inveter with Xantrex RS2000 OR RS3000?
Although my '95 may be different from the '92-'93s -- it may also be
similar.

I have dual Heart 2500 watt inverters -- it appears that a previous
owner upgraded them with new ones a couple of years before I got the
coach. I have a Heart Link 2000-R controller that handles the
charging, etc. This is a more advanced model than the standard OEM
controller. (But it takes a rocket scientist to figure out the manual!)

The inverted power seems to have its own circuits. There are two
breakers (located on the engine bulkhead below the main panel --
quite near where the inverter box is located). The inverters are in a
box above some of the house batteries in a curb-side compartment.

I haven't tried to trace out exactly how things are wired -- but it
seems to have independent circuits. When I turn off the (home-type)
refrigerator by (1) setting the switch inside to off and (2) flipping
the circuit breaker on the main panel, the light inside goes out.
However, when I disconnect from shore power (or the generator is
turned off), then the inverters automatically switch on -- and the
light goes on in the refrigerator! I'm guessing that the breakers
near the inverters actually control the inverted circuits. (I haven't
taken the time to experiment with this yet.)

I have assumed that the breakers may turn off the inverters/chargers,
so I've left them on when attached to shore power. Perhaps I need to
perform some more experiments.

So, I don't think it's necessarily safe to assume anything about how
the inverters may be wired into the house system until you can
experiment with them.

The Xantrex remote panel replaced the old Heart panel. Unfornunately, I had the
work done at a local dealer that serviced Birds and did not watch the process..
I believe that they use some of the old wires, but I don't know to what extent.
