A question for the "yankees"...surface rust
I'm a southerner, and around here we are not used to seeing much rust
on the underside of our vehicles. My newly acquired PT, however, was a
northern coach, and the underpinnings have surface rust on them. Since
this is all foreign to me, I ask...is this really something to worry
much about? Is there anything I should do about it? Nothing looks
weak or rusted through with holes or anything like that, there's just a
coating on everything under there.

The good news is that the body is fine, the coach was stripped to the
bare metal and re-painted 3 years ago, and I have pictures of it
stripped showing no body rust.

Opinions/advice?

Scott,
The body of your Bird is all galvanized steel so rust there should
never be much of a problem. The frame may have some light rust that
can be lightly sanded and touched up with a good quality (spray
cans) rust resistant spray paint.

The only thing of concern would then be grounds. If you notice BB
coated over the grounds with a heavy bodied paint. thick paint will
not flow between the strap and frame/body. Paint with elasticity hold
up better when painted thick compared to paint designed to be applied
in thin coats. I wonder what they use, it looks like red primer
solids.??????

You can clean the rust with acid gel and flush with water then reseal
the metal with Continental frame paint but bare metal (rusted metal
reveals bare) wont hold color without prepcoat and primer.
