Stay running problem
I am one of those "lurkers" that is referred to in this forum. I like
to look and learn but now have a question I hope someone can answer.

We have a BB with an 8v92 Detroit. She will start fine, runs for about
30 seconds,on high idle, the check engine light comes on and she dies.
She dies within 10 seconds on normal idle. She will restart but
continues to die.

I have read on the forum something about the codes flashing. I am
assuming that is the sequence of flashes under the "do not shift". If
I am correct so far, be advised there is 4 flashes. What does this
mean? Does anyone have an idea where to start? Any help/ideas would
be appreciated.

reading????? It may just be a sender problem or the real deal.

The flashes and codes are gathered by pushing the check buttons, on
a full moon , facing north , while genuflecting. then the codes
reveal a bunch of crap that could be a result of the rapid shut down.
I think the blinks you see are just an attention getter for the
driver. I say it is a sender failure because it happened while the
bus was parked. I hope someone here can't offer a better clue for
you.

I would hire a mobile mechanic. The hook ups for the computer-
reader on my 94pt are under the shift selector. I have to remove
the screws and lift the cover off.

Greg, I just love your sence of humor, always makes reading your
responses fun.

Oil level and guage read good, heat the same. There is no water in
the fuel and air filter good. Checked all the guages on the dash
before the shut down and all look fine. We suspect a sender problem
but don't know where to start.

Was hoping not to have to get a mobile mechanic, I can hear the cha-
ching already.

Won't be able to make it to Quartzsite as Paul may be retired but, I
still have to work. Will miss you and Tim and the great bunch that
was at the first rally in Orange County.

Stay running problem
The oil sending switches (pressure switch) starboard side rear rail just aft of
the tag axle. I got a brass plug removed the switch got a switch from a dealer
he had to order it. I have wondered that if in an emergency failure of the
pressure switch, knowing that you had oil whether you could short the switch and
run the coach. I will try to find the model number later today and post it.

Stay running problem
I would aleays look for the simple stuff first. Check the battery
connections and make sure they are clean. Check the batteries and
make sure there is not a bad one. The computors that run these
engines are very sensitve to low voltage or bad grounds. Mike

Thanks for the idea, Jim. Problem being air bags are depleated,
can't
get under coach to see, and won't run long enough to air up. Run the
generator you say, I should mention that the starter on the generator
went out about a week ago.

It seems at this point we have no other option but to call for a
mobile mechanic. But, do appreciate your response and will be sure
and mention it to the mechanic.

I like your thinking, I too like to look for the simple stuff first.
I move switches, check wires and fuses while Paul is looking for his
volt meter. Believe it or not, more times then not, I get it
fixed/figured out before he gets all his tools ready.

Anyway, we checked the batteries and connections and all seem good.
All three starting batteries were replaced about a year and a half
ago.

Be glad you can't air up your air bags.
Getting under a BB with only the air bags up is like Russian Roulette. Don't
take the chance call a mobile repairman.

Don't you have HWH jacks? Do you have a compressor? if so at the rear
of the coach starboard of the engine on the frame there should be a
schrader valve you could air up the suspension, drop the hwh jacks,
and BLOCK THE CHASSIS. Then you should be able to get under and check
out the pressure switch mine was a kyser 1042-08200-03 got at
Freightliner in west palm beach fl

Your issues with the Genset starter could???? be a clue to electrical
issues with the Detroit DDEC. The Genset starters get burnt up by
trying to start it with low batteries and or cranking too long to
bring fuel up to the gen from the tank. My genset fuel drifts back
to the tank if it sits un used for more than 3 days. The electric
fuel pump runs while you are glowing plugs with the momentary switch.
You can also run just the fuel pump by jumping the positive lead. If
the batteries are low, I move the tray out then hook a battery jump
pack positive clamp on the big wire lug to the starter and the
negative jump pack clamp is hooked up to the Genset frame. I glow
the plugs regardless of the outside temp (count to 20) and it is an
effortless start. I keep the Pepboys jump pack plugged in to a
inverter 110 outlet in the bay (it has a builtin automatic charger)


The following is what I understand about Aux. Battery switch and
charging????????????
The genset will not charge the Detroit start batteries unless you
turn the dash AUX. Battery switch to the position that turns on the
indicator light. You will note that while the Detroit is running
this light comes on automatic and the big alternators on the Detroit
are charging both battery banks. When the bus is at rest (no Genset
or Detroit running) and you are using the inverter it is best to keep
the Aux battery switch centered (off). If you inverter camp with Aux
Battery light on , both sets of batteries are being depleted. When my
bus is parked for storage periods I keep it plugged in and the Aux
light off/ centered. If the starter bank of batteries read low
before a trip I hold the Aux momentary button while I start the
Detroit.
