Electric Retarder
I just used 4 for a long time coming down the mountain just west of Denver
on I-70. Running a 320 amp alternator. Is there any other downside to using
4 for long periods besides the amp draw?

Electric Retarder
Dan:
Bearing damage/failure inside the retarder, fire from the grease
inside the bearings/housing and warping of the rotors. My manual
states to run for no more than 5 min in #4 position to avoid the
above issues and to let it cool by running at 15 mph or better with
the retarder off for 5 min after a hard run.

Electric Retarder
Dan, when I had my FC, I believe that I only had a 165 amp alternator. Maybe
thats why the volt meter went below 12 on long downgrades- alternator was too
small.
