step air leak
I have a leak at the control box- if that is the correct term, by my
step. The cylinder is fine. The leak is not at a fitting, but at
another part of that control. Anyone have this situation? Ernie-83PT40

Ernie, I had the same prob as a symtom to a bad seal in the ram. When
I would tug the step fully open the air hissing would stop. (My
94pt40 has a non spring ram with two air ports) If you remove the ram
and blow air in, to push the stroke out , the air should stop blowing
out the other port when the stroke bottoms out. if the air continues
to blow out the other port the seal is bad in the ram. You may be
able to remove both airlines to the ram and test it without removing
the ram first. I tried to split the ram open to replace the seal but
the Clippar ram used on my bus could not be serviced.

Ernie,
As a suggestion,I would, first of all, contact Bennie Collier at BlueBird
Customer Service and get a detailed schematic of the step air system and ask him
where you should start trouble shooting. He usually knows the weaknesses &
common failures and can save you some time. I do all my own work on my '91
(except computers) and (1)reading the manual, (2)checking the blueprints, and
(3)then calling Bennie are my first steps in fixing stuff. They often have
better drawings and he will fax them to you. My '78 FC 31' had a tempermental
step. Cold weather made it slow.
I'm getting ready to work on my TV antenna system and I'm trying to "tone
out" my coax cables, so I will probably be asking for a diagram of them soon. I
usually only have to call him about once a year!
I live just west of Lewisville, Texas (940-241-2244) if you need any
help.

Ernie I have one of the expensive ultrasonic leak detectors and it
works. But I also have a small bottle of Rectorseek that you can buy
at Walmart and it works just as good. You swab it on all of the
places you think there might be a leak and no matter how small the
leak is this stuff will form a bubble around it locating the exact
spot. Its a couple of dollars a
bottle. http://www.rectorseal.com/ac.htm#leak%20locators

Ernie today someone else has been occupying my body. I meant Home
Depot and its in the heating and air conditioning section. Its in a
plastic bottle and is an orange color. This stuff sticks like snot
but will wash off easily or dry without harming anything you swab it
on to. Believe me if there is even the tiniest leak it will start
forming a bubble even hours later.
