Height Difference Between FC's and PT's?

Height Difference Between FC's and PT's?
Hello Travelodge'rs!

Is there a height (overall clearance) difference between the mid 80's
forward control and pusher units?

As I posted earlier, I'm hoping to buy a Wanderlodge that I can
construct a roof platform on. Because it has the body of an
All-American school bus, the Wanderlodge has to be the best rv to
build a platform on!

I'm worried about clearance under bridges however. I hope to stay
under 12' 6" in height, hopefully with a 2' railing.

So every inch counts.

From looking at all the great info on this Forum, it looks like the
top of the wheel wells in the FC protrude into the interior. It also
looks like the floor of the PT does not - as the underbelly storage
boxes seem much larger.

Does anybody know if there is a difference? Even if it is just 6" or 1'?

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated!

Andy:

The Fc's are aprox one foot lower than the PT's. My FC was 10' 2" clearance

Height Difference Between FC's and PT's?
Hello Ralph,

Thanks for clearing that up! The FC will work best for me.

Might you know the height of the FC to the top of the roof (not at the
hightest point on the AC)? That is obviously where the floor of my
roof platform will begin.

I guess I'll also be looking for a FC with central air conditioning so
I don't have to worry about roof AC's getting in the way.

Does anybody know if the 1987 - 89 FC units had central AC as an
option? I know that they were available in the mid 80's - not sure
about after the 87' re-design.

Thanks again for being so helpful!

Andy:

The roof on the 80's Birds are already a good platform as is. These is a
double diamond plate that covers the roof, and there is a railing
installed, though a short one.

Not sure but you might take a look at Traveller ( coach name) it is a FC
and a good Coach and well maintained.

OK Andy,

I'm curious. Why do you need to build an added roof platform? What's
wrong with the heavy aluminum diamond plate flooring already on the
roof of the older Wanderlodges? At the NASCAR race in Dallas, I once
saw an old Bird in the infield with up to 13 people on the roof at one
time, just using the existing aluminum roof cover. All they did was
put about 3' posts and safty chains around the goat railing for some
degree of safety, and of course the custom construction grade trash
tubing down to the drum on the ground for the empties. They had a
tall step ladder at the back in additon to the bus ladder for access
to the roof.

Just curious.

Ron, the previous owner of my coach, put 12 feet 2 inches on the height of
my coach. I added 2 roof airs so that should raise it a bit more. ernie-83pt40

Height Difference Between FC's and PT's?
Hello Mike,

I currently have an old 1969 Dodge school bus with a custom roof
platform. It has 2' railings and is 8' by 24' wide. It is my
favorite part of the vehicle. I use if for parades, shows, races, and
many other events.

It has no obstructions, has solid railings and is flat.

I hope to do the same thing on a Wanderlodge after removing everything
from the roof.

The stock Wanderlodge roof rack is narrow, sloped, and has plenty of
obstructions to trip on. I don't want anybody getting hurt!
