Anyone know any reason (other than bad rings) why a Cat 3208 with 87k
on it would use excessive amounts of oil (4qts in 900 miles).

Check the fill plugs on both valve covers for tightness. If there is no
leaks, skip this check.

How about some more information first. Are you leaking oil anyplace, rear
main seal, valve covers, positive crankcase vent on the valve covers?

Could be your over filling the oil, most diesel engine will blow
out the extra oil, your better of running a quart or two low then to
over fill. When you change oil put in the 20 quarts, this includs the
filler, then check the dip stick, (the dip stick could be off)it
should be close to full, if the dip stick shows low, then your dip
stick is off.

I recently changed the oil in our generator. After a short trip of about 40
miles I checked the oil and found it to be about a pint low. I apparently left
the washer off of the drain plug (probably in old oil). New washer--no
leaks. Put a piece of cardboard under your engine to see if you have an oil
leak.

Thanks for your time Tom,
There are no leaks that I can see. It does blow some blue smoke
when the engine is revved up after starting but only on the way up
the rpm range. There is a ~ 1" breather? hose below the engine that
blows oil vapor when the engine is hot.

I just got the coach 2 months ago. I did change the air filter
and the oil was changed the day I picked it up (along with the oil
filters). Since I am a diesel rookie I didn't notice anything but
what I considered excessive black exhaust smoke under heavy loads.

Thanks for your time Richard and Carol,
Yes it is turbo charged. How can I tell if it is the turbo seal?
