A newbie's DD questions
I know that older DD engines are two strokes with cam actuated
exhaust valves but no intakes because they are blower scavenged. I also think I know that the -71 series GM diesels had belt driven Rootes-type superchargers. Here is my first question: Do all -92 series engines have turbochargers? (ie, not superchargers). Second question: On busses with 8V92 engines, are the engines mounted inline or transverse? I know that on the old GM 4610/4710 busses with 6V71 engines, the engines were mounted transversely. On 8V92 engined birds, is the transmission ahead of or behind the rear axle? I believe all of the DD 2 cycle engines, series 53, 71, and 92's have roots blowers (or superchargers) whether belt or mechanically driven, as they won't run na. Turbo chargers are in addition to that blower to increase hp ratings and some of those turbo'd gain further boost with after cooling. Most motorhomes employ inline configurations with the transmission bolted up directly to the engine, both ahead of the driveline to the drive axle. (or behind dependent on view of a pusher) Exceptions could be "converted buses". However all Birds I'm familiar with have the engines configured to inline. John..to the best of my knowledge all 8v92 have both, a supercharger and a turbocharger...The engine in the 8v92 powered Bluebirds are mounted inline with the transmission behind the rear axel and a short drive shaft..Jim barone 1991 PT

Because the DD is a 2 cycle engine it needs a boost at low RPM and
the blower provides that. The turbo charger adds to the boost when the RPM's climb. A newbie's DD questions
71 series blowers are gear driven from the front. Also the governor
is driven off the back of the blower / supercharger on the inline units (not sure on the v's). There are many non-turbocharged Detroit 2-strokes in Fire truck, marine, and industrial applications. I've currently got 5 detroits of various sizes and only 1 is turbocharged (4-53T). Thomas 83FC35 SB Houston, TX Just back from Seaworld in San Antonio |
