Lose the points. A Pertronix breakerless conversion would be a better
investment. Engine will start and run much better. Put one in a 312 Ford engine I used to own and was amazed at the improvement. Put one on a 67 427 Chevy engine, same result. If the carb gives you any trouble, don't try to fix it, buy a new one, not with a governor. Good advise Mike. I followed Mike's and other's advise when I had my
1974 BB with the 534 gas engine. I was amazed how well the engine ran after installing the Pertronix unit. It took about 20 minutes to remove the old point system and install the pertronix unit...you can't miss on this one. Install a new coil, new plugs and wires too. I had to remove the dog-house to change the plugs/wires. Again, following these guys advise, I removed the carburetor/govenor garbage and installed a 750 Holley. Easy job, about one hour. You need a smaller carburetor, a 650 CFM for the 391. Good luck. Curt Sprenger 1987 PT38 Anaheim, Ca. Mike Hohnstein wrote: > Lose the points. Mike, FWIW, When the Magnapulse aftermarket ignition failed on our 77 534 Ford the mechanic replaced it with off the shelf parts (Ford OEM). The distributor, coil and ignition module were replaced. Wires and plugs had been previously replaced during a tune-up and the alternator had been rebuilt. [The new distributor is 6" taller and requires fabrication of a new bracket for the engine a/c compressor to move it outboard 2". If your engine a/c is inoperative you might just remove the compressor and reroute the belt.] Mileage went from a dismal 3.9 mpg to a high of 6.4 mpg - avg 5.0 mpg flat towing a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Starting and driveability were also improved. I recently talked with an auto enthusiast who spoke highly of a throttle body injector for big block gas engines (i.e. Chevy 454 and Ford 460). He said horsepower was down slightly but low end torque and fuel economy improved - just the ticket for a 'Bird. My wife's '93 Cadillac Fleetwood had a 5.7L V-8 with throttle body injection that delivered 25 mpg at 75 mph and would top out at 120 mph. Hmmmm...food for thought.
