FWIW, this is for a retarder, not the Jake brake.

There are four types or means of auxiliary braking available and at
least three have been used on the BB WL.

The Jake Brake was originally developed by the Jacob's Machine Co. It
is correctly called an engine brake because it changes the timing of
the exhaust valves to utilize the engine compression for braking.

The Exhaust brake was originally developed by Pac Brake of Canada. It
is basically a butterfly valve that closes the exhaust causing greater
back pressure which gives a braking effect.

The Telma Retarder, pictured here as the Jacob's retarder, is a
magnetic device that uses magnetic field to reduce the rotational
speed of the drive shaft.

The transmission retarder, which is available on Allison
transmissions, is basically a torque converter working backwards. The
braking effect is dissipated as heat.

The first three, and I believe the fourth also, have had their patents
expire which means that anyone can produce these items and there are
several companies that produce more than one of these items. Jacob's
is one of these companies.

Ernie is looking for information on the Jake or engine brake. .
