This topic seems to come up every so often on these forums and a lot
of well meaning replies are given, but one thing that doesn't seem to
be mentioned is, that insurance rates are very sensitive to where you
live, even within a given state, so comparing the rates that one pays
in one state to where another individual lives, or as the insurance
people like to say, where the insured vehicle is garaged, is almost
useless for comparison purposes.

To give you an example for instance, here in the state of South
Carolina, one of the most expensive insurance states, thanks to our
legislature and a lot of uninsured motorist, the insurance rates vary
depending on what county that you live in. I live six miles outside of
the greater metropolitan area of Columbia, SC the state capital and I
pay the same rate as if I were living in downtown Columbia, just
because I live in the same county. I can go about 100 miles from here
and cross the Georgia state line and get a substantial savings, if I
lived there.

When I had my business and I was on the road for almost 90% of the
time and hardly ever traveled within the state of South Carolina,
other than to leave from and return to home, I still had to pay the
same rate. the cost of commercial insurance for that vehicle was a
major factor in my decision to retire completely from that business
and close it down after over thirty years.

Since I am a lifetime member of the Good Sam club, I have all six of
my vehicles insured, with the exception of my Motorcycle (they don't
offer it here because of the no helmet required law, even though I
always wear one, for the past 21 years) through their insurance
program, which is with GMAC and have had a very good working
relationship with them on claims in the past and I am satisfied with
their rates, compared to other insurers in this state. I believe that
GMAC also offers insurance through Camping World.

Just be sure you are not comparing apples, to oranges when asking for
insurance rate comparisons, especially from state to state.
