Black smoke and soot is a sign that you need a new air filter component for the generator. Check where the output of the breather tube is -- mine was 6" from the air intake. I replaced the breather tube with a new, longer tube that I routed out the bottom of the generator case (through the sponge-rubber where the door and box meet). Air filters now last twice as long as before....
