Don, I'm impressed you caught that one... I'm almost always towing the toad, so the 55 MPH limit applies. I figured the 3 axle limit only applied to "trucks" since the commercial busses (with tag axles) blow by at 70+ mph all the time and I don't see very many collecting speeding tickets.

California signs used to say "AUTOS WITH TRAILERS - TRUCKS 55 MAXIMUM" (and many of those signs remain). There is no basis to believe that they don't truly mean "Trucks."

The commercial driver handbook in California is a bit more explicit about what vehicles are subject to 55:

* Any truck or truck tractor having three or more axles.
* Any vehicle pulling any other vehicle.
* A school bus transporting any pupil.
* A farm labor vehicle transporting passengers.
* Any vehicle transporting explosives.
* A trailer bus
