Actually, it really is hurricane related. The refineries were shut down
from Ike and they take quite a few days to restart and are just now coming
back online. Without any fuel, the pipelines can't run. Right now, Colonial
Pipeline is running at a fraction of its normal rate. And, Colonial
supplies about 70% of the Atlanta fuel - probably comparable amounts right
up the I-85 corridor through NC and VA. It took Colonial 9 days to get up
to full speed after Gustav. But, it required them to use reserves to do
that for Gustav (now drained) and Gustav didn't cause near as many
refineries to shut down or as much loss of power (which is required for
running a pipeline). So, this has taken a lot longer to get back up to
speed. Plus, requiring the low sulfur fuel in many metro areas (for all
types of fuel - not just diesel) hasn't helped.

FWIW, I used to work for Colonial Pipeline. I have some friends over there
and they filled me in that the refineries are coming up to speed now but
things won't be back to normal until early/mid next week. And, it will be a
few days after that before things are delivered up the line and then out to
the gas stations. So, I wouldn't expect any relief until late next week or
the early part of the following week unless they find some other way to
bring gas in. There IS gas coming in now. But, its coming in at a much
slower rate than we all need.

Also, all of the stations around my area (Marietta/East Cobb) that sell
diesel still have diesel (at least for now). I run a Ram 3500 Cummins as my
driver and I've not had any trouble getting diesel as yet. Regular gas,
however, is a problem. I have sidelined my wife's car except to get her
to/from things I can't take her to (work mostly). We take the truck
everywhere until that settles out. Plus, we've stopped driving unless we
REALLY have to go somewhere (probably something I should consider in the
future, too). I still have over 3/4 tank left in the truck and she has 3/4
tank left her in her car. We both should be good through at least next
week. My Winnebago is at 2/3 tank and I have no trips planned until Oct 3
when I will go down to Georgia Tech for the GT - Duke game and then again
on Oct 11 for the GT - Gardner-Webb game. I will burn only a few gallons
for those trips (maybe 15). So, I'll be fine. Then, I head to Clemson, SC
on Oct 17 for the GT - Clemson game. I'm going to need gas for that one.
So, I hope the shortage sorts itself out before then. Otherwise, I'll be
figuring out another way to get up there.
