Randy, your right the DOT isnt the only one, As a class A commercial driver in California I can not operate a two stroke (not smoggable in ca), driving a nonsmogged diesel for me is eventually a felony violation. I'm in violation even when I gather $1,000.00 cash from my efforts digging holes and put in in the tank of my bus then hit the road to spend the other $1,000.00 in the vacation economy. With all the medical health requirements , specialized drivers training, concurent drug/alchahol testing & classes, 2 million dollars liability, bonds, CHP onsite inspections and record audits. I am in violation of the law because the higher standard require me to answer to a different set of rules then most drivers. even when I drive my 97 dodge diesel pickup I am in violation because it is not smogged. The pick up is smoggable but if I have it tested and it does not pass twice it is no longer sellable in CA and title will be more or less listed as salvage, my bus too. I recently got a misdomenor violation and $1,500.00 fine(reduced in court) for being in violation because I prepaid for a Biannual CHPinspection $510. and that act excellerated the necessary inspection period to 7 months from the 26 months that failure to pay would have allowed. I sat road side for 2 hours at an inspection while I was paying $110.00 per the hour for labor/rentals to wait my return. never mind the fact that I presented the Commercial cop paperwork that backed up the window sticker that I just passed my 3 month dot. Like permits, fees, insurance, fuel, kickback/commissions, and the financing of the costs I just pass the expense on to the buyer. I wonder if consuming non productive expence could hurt the economy? . Charging $2,000 for a $500.00 effort does make me the same as I describe the C.Cop and part of the economic problem. Thanks for pointing it out.
