Why is my gas gauge pessimistic?

The generator did it once as I was bring it home. Once it hic uped I
shut it down to avoid the prime issue, but after I filled up it
started up with no problem. I have several pieces of pvc/cpc pipe
around here, I think I am going to make some type of dip stick to
verify the quantity. Just got to find the 1k to fill it up.
