You are absolutely right Tom. It would be very hard to find a piece
of walnut thick enough to do the job. I'm willing to bet the walnut
used to make the existing original clocks was laminated. Back in the
day I used to buy a lot of wood. I mean A LOT of wood for the U.S.
Navy Submarine Base out there in Goose Creek? Cooper River...

An industrial drum sander would make the job much easier but there
will still be a lot of hand sanding to do.

I'm surprised there were no takers on the acrylic idea? Once you
have the acrylic blank you can make it any color you want, ghost
flames and all...
