Totally smoked my battery charger, Transfer switch questions

You need to check your shore power,when there is a "spike" the charger is
the first to go.
What happened to you is exactly what happened to me when I was plugging in
at a place that the
power was wrongly wired resulting in a 220v spike.
What you are experiencing is hopefully much less serious than mine was.
