Genny flexible exhaust
My 87FC35 has an 8k diesel genset (never figured out whose 3 cyl engine it is...
doesn't say on it). My genset is fixed and not on a sliding tray. Anyway, I've replaced the flexible piece of the exhaust 3 times in 5 years, and it just broke again. The piece is about 12 inches long and is of course designed to absorb some of the vibration off the genset. But I'm tired of replacing that thing. Does anyone have a thought on what it would do to just replace the flex pipe with a solid pipe? I'm thinking the exhaust hangers would then just have to absorb any of the vibration. Thanks, Alan Johnson 87FC35 |

Genny flexible exhaust
Alan,
I had a flex connector fail on the generator exhaust of my PT90 shortly after I purchased it in 1991. This was an "accordion" type about 10-12" long. I replaced it with two flex connectors, one where the original was and another on the pipe where it turned 90 degrees. The replacements had a stainless woven appearance. Doubling up seemed to do the trick. They were still fine when I sold the coach in 2001. Don Bradner has that coach now and can tell you if they are still holding. Rich D. Genny flexible exhaust
Rich,
On that second flex pipe, I assume it right AFTER the 90 degree elbow, right? (As opposed to the flex making the elbow.) Thanks for the advice guys! Genny flexible exhaust
Alan, Yes. The second flex was installed on the vertical section just below the
90 degree elbow. Since the 15K genny in that Bird (Serial # 2) had a water cooled exhaust manifold that connected the exhaust via studs protruding from the manifold, there was now enough flex to install or remove the pipe without disturbing the manifold. As I recall, thge two flex sections were different diameters but both available at a local muffler shop. Rich D.
