Wireless rear cameras?
I notice on eBay that there is now a wireless rear view camera system
available with no wires running from the camera to the monitor. Anyone tried on of these? Are they reliable/good quality picture? Scott Forman 86 PT38 Memphis |

Scott,
I don't have a bird, but the wireless camera works just fine for me with my SOB. Got mine from Sams Club for under $100. If the camera is left on to long than the lens tends to burn up. Its a great little set up for a car in the driveway when you want to check behind you for kids but should be wired up to transmission when put in reverse. After trying it out in my rig it did work great but like I said before when it is left on to long it will burn up the camera. Jon > |

Scott, I just ordered a system for $349.00 Color, night vision, It's
not wireless but I figured in the process of installation running the wire from the camera to the monitor would be pretty easy. I am figuring mounting the camera on the out side of the bus will be the hardest part and I can't see that being all that difficult. I looked at the wireless systems and it just didn't seem to me to be worth the difference. I'll likely have this thing installed by this time next week so I'll let you know what I think. I know there are some cheaper systems but I would rather spend enough to get it right the first time. Similar units have been on sale at Costco and Walmart.
There are two types of these systems. One is designed for intermittent use (for backing only) and the other is designed for full time use. (There is a price difference caused by the quality of the components.) I would be concerned about the signal strength with the all-steel WL body --  but it may be satisfactory. I'd buy on the basis of being able to test it and return if not satisfactory. =============================================== Pete Masterson, Author of Book Design and Production: A Guide for Authors and Publishers "Aeonix1@Mac.com" Aeonix Publishing Group   http://www.aeonix.com =============================================== On May 18, 2008, at 8:30 AM, Scott Forman wrote:

I installed one on the outside of my 79 FC 33' & I took the center clearance light out of the top & installed it there. It worked out good & didn't have to drill any new holes through the bus as I went in thought the hole where the wire for the light came out. Scott, you may want to keep in mind "image reversing" and full time
view for toad watching (as PeteM points out). You may also want to find a set up that will run additional cams for turning and other critical areas. I like that my toad pickes up a reflection of bus taillights and I tie a ribbon on the steering wheel so I can see it spinn then recenter via the camera when I turn. While on the subject of cameras I went to a customers house and as soon as I got to the front door, he called me on my cell from his office. He has a Cam pointed at the door and wireless routed to his home internet connection. On the camera is a motion detector which triggers a pic and emails that pic to his cell phone. He said it cost less than $200. The image was so clear he could tell how many fingers I held up when I triggered the camera early the next day. It would be nice to have this feature and a periodic pic sent to my cell of the bus interior and a big thermometer when we leave a pet in the bus. Wireless rear cameras?
Don, I took your suggestion and removed the middle light. I ran a
piece of parachute cord from that spot thru the coach up to the monitor location. I built myself a bracket to mount the monitor. When the electronics shows up hopefully the rest will be a cake walk. Never seems like it works out that way but to this point it's gone well. Last week I finished up the sound insulation project (at least temporarily) I placed a piece of carpet under the captains seat and the co-pilot seat with carpet padding under that. I extended it up under the dash as much as I could. That really cut down the sound coming thru the floor. I didn't use Steve's material for that job right now for two reasons. One I didn't have any left and I do plan to at some point get air pedestel seats. My idea is when I tackle that I will have to remove all of the carpet and basically start over. ( Step by step.) The coach now is quiet enough that you can talk to the co-pilot using a normal voice and you can even listen to the radio with the engine running. A BIG improvement. Wireless rear cameras?
While we're talking cameras, has anyone replaced the inside-mounted
factory camera with another inside-mounted cam? A previous owner of my coach removed the original and bolted a different camera outside. I don't like the camera hanging off the coach and prefer the sleekness of the factory camera-behind-the-window idea. Any thoughts on this project would be nice. I haven't looked at it yet, but I presume I could just replace the little camera window and mount a good camera behind it and be pretty well set. Though, it seems like others are not retaining the inside-camera idea and I'm wondering why? -Ryan '86 PT-40 8V92 On Sun, May 18, 2008 at 4:29 PM, bubblerboy64 > > Don, I took your suggestion and removed the middle light. Ryan,
Been there, done that. If you use a night vision camera with the little IR "lights", it will be useless at night as all you can see on the monitor is glare of the IR's on the window. However, there is a solution: 1) Buy a non-IR camera (hard to find), or 2) cover the IR's with electrical tape. I did option 2. The camera couldn't see in the dark, but it was still better at night than the original one. This was on my 82 FC. I am going to do something with my 86 PT, not sure what yet.
