88 FC swing rad NOT???
I am attempting to remove the rad from my 88FC. I removed the bumper to
make things easier. Undid the bolts on the drivers side. Undid the air to air cooler and removed it entirely. This rad was out while at BB as they changed the AC compressor and all the belts for the PO. I can get the rad to open maybe 4 inches and then it stops. I have put PB blaster opn the "swing" pin and beat the bracket to loosen any rust. Still no luck. The resistance is from the RH side. Is there another bolt or bracket that has to be removed. I am tempted to just knock the pin out but I wanted to undo the top rad hose first. It is impossible to get at the top rad hose without swinging the rad. Any suggestions. I am envious of the owners with a true swing rad !!!! THanks Bruce 1988 FC35 |

Bruce,
Shave all the hair off your chest, have someone do the same to your back, grease up and you may slide right in there. LOL No Kidding, it's a little swinger, maybe hasn't reached the age of puberty, I think I measured somthing like 14" metal to metal at total swing. The top, drivers side has to be loose, or, as in the case of mine, have a long flexibe top hose that goes to the passenger side then back, I don't like it that way but it worked. I did fashion a shelf so the hose would not rub against the belts (mine had started to cut into this hose.) I believe I was told this was removed from within the doghouse, a heck of a job but doable. Worst case for the time being would be cutting it in two then figuring out how to replace with a new hose. The full swing is limited by the welded piece that acts as a lower hinge support hitting the charge air cooler. I am a big feller and I could only work one-handed once I could slide inside. Remove the shroud at the four corners, then take the fan blade off to give you some room. Bill Pape or someone else may explain how to or give you some hint on how to do this. bob janes, 87fc35, greenville, sc --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "birdshill123" > > I am attempting to remove the rad from my 88FC. 88 FC swing rad NOT???
Mine's a retrofit swing rad so this might not apply, but on mine, there are some
cable ties that hold the transmission lines in place when closed, If these ties are not cut, it won't swing open very wide. Kerry 82 FC 35 Denver |

88 FC swing rad NOT???
David and others: Than you for the replies. The 87 to 89 FC's are a
different breed. The swing rad opens just enough to change belts and rip your hands to shreds. My problem is it wont open enough. I got it open 6 inches. Now I am thinking maybe it is the top rad hose that is holding it closed. Tomorrow a.m. I am going to remove the air to air cooler tube and hose on the LH side. Then MAYBE I can undo the top rad hose. If not I will cut that baby ( silicone hose!!) From what little I can see it appears to be about a 8 inch hose with a metal elbow and then more hose. That would not allow much movement. Anyone who would tackle a roadside repair involving swinging the rad is crazy. I undertsand the 86 and older units are much easier. Bruce 1988FC35 |

88 FC swing rad NOT???
I had no clue untill after I got mine home, found a fan, shroud and an old
electric chutch, and The shaft missing, up in the rear storage pod, that mine had been converted to electric fans. There are 4, housed in 2 small shrouds. It looks like there's plenty of room to change my belts. Maybe that's an answer to all this trama with swing radiators.(maybe quieter too) I'll let you know in a few days when I remove my belts to check out the bearings in all that spins up there.I'll see if I can find the manufactures name.
