California speed limits
Pete introduced a non-sequitur in the shock-mount threads that I thought might
bear a bit of contrary opinion. California signs used to say "AUTOS WITH TRAILERS - TRUCKS 55 MAXIMUM" (and many of those signs remain). All new signage consist of two separate signs normally placed one after another, and usually after the standard 65 (or 70) sign. The first reads "TRUCKS, 3 AXLES OR MORE 55 MAXIMUM" and the second reads "ALL VEHICLES WHEN TOWING 55 MAXIMUM" Pete has apparently replaced "Trucks" in that first new sign with "vehicles" There is no basis to believe that they don't truly mean "Trucks." The commercial driver handbook in California is a bit more explicit about what vehicles are subject to 55: * Any truck or truck tractor having three or more axles. * Any vehicle pulling any other vehicle. * A school bus transporting any pupil. * A farm labor vehicle transporting passengers. * Any vehicle transporting explosives. * A trailer bus On 3/10/2009 at 10:50 AM Pete Masterson wrote: >at 55 (the official speed limit for 3 axle vehicles) |

Don, I'm impressed you caught that one... I'm almost always towing the toad, so the 55 MPH limit applies. I figured the 3 axle limit only applied to "trucks" since the commercial busses (with tag axles) blow by at 70+ mph all the time and I don't see very many collecting speeding tickets.

I've heard that Greyhound fought the CA 55mph years ago and won because the tag axle having the single, not dual, wheels.

The law has never, so far as I know, cared about singles/duals. Until recently
the signs didn't mention number of axles. There have been debates about whether "AUTOS WITH TRAILERS" applied to motor homes pulling a car, and the new signs make it clear that motor homes are included. I've seen a number of posts elsewhere since the new signage from drivers of 2-axle bobtails who say they never knew they weren't subject to the rule!
