Cruise Control inoperative - 91WBWL

I just discovered my cruise control in not working. When I switch it
on, the 'check engine' light comes on. When I switch it off, the light
goes out. There is no effect on the engine as far as I can tell.

The cause may be related to my rather extensive disassembly of the
overhead cabinets to replace radio speakers, install a flat screen TV
and rebuild the air conditioning motors. Thus, I was also messing
around with running wires down the driver side window piller to the
radio.

Of course, I didn't notice the cruise wasn't working until I brought it
home to load for a trip we're taking tomorrow. I know it was working 8
weeks ago before my upgrades mentioned above.

Any advice for what to look for first would be appreciated.
