Thermostat Change Out Project & It's Growing
What fun I'm having! Kevin McKeown stopped by this afternoon. Kevin
described my current project with some other words. I'll let Kevin respond. The thermostat change out project has grown...I'm replacing the fuel hoses and coolant hoses in the area of the thermostat change out (mainly the cross-over tube area), and more. The radiator is out and at the radiator shop, the coolant and the high lead content solder have made a mess on top of and below the radiator core tubes. I do believe the core can be salvaged. There is no seepage at the core/tanks. I have pictures of the core tubes if interested. I've purchased all new hoses and hose clamps, etc., etc. I'm building the new hoses using the existing fittings, cost savings and I have time. I'm starting to feel broke....goes along with owning a 'Bird, any RV for that matter, and I've had the feeling for well over 30 years owning RVs, but you got to enjoy life, work to live, not live to work... FYI thing 1...removed the fuel pump, 91,000 miles, it looks like new and no wear. Reinstalled the fuel pump. FYI thing 2...my mechanic buddy, he's worked on and supervised the work on these engines for 30 years working for the local transit district. His experience says the fuel pump should be tested for fuel pressure at 150,000 miles, 20 pressure at idle and 50 to 60 at 2,150 rpms. Also if anyone sees seepage at the fuel pump and it's fuel, not oil, you can expect an engine no start because of no fuel pressure. Some members on this form have experienced that condition. FYI thing 3...he also tells me that we should not use basic car and small truck thinking for these engines. They were made to last a lot longer, at least 400,000 miles. However, the engine needs to be run, not sitting still for long periods, and it needs to be maintained regularly. Enough for now. Enjoy your holiday weekend. -- Curt Sprenger 1987 PT38 8V92 "MacAttack Racing" Anaheim Hills, Calif. |

Thermostat Change Out Project & It's Growing
In regards to Curt's current "project", I think he started to just change
the oil, and said, "Hell, the oil is out of the motor, might as well rebuild it!". It might not be quite that extreme, but almost. Curt's attitude about his BB is something like, "Hmm....I've never taken that apart, and it has a little dirt on it, might as well replace it". I've asked curt to give me all of his discarded parts...they are probably in better shape than my currently "in-place" parts. Good work, Curt!!! Curt's approach is a good one. Much like mine after buying my PT.
Might as well have a good base line to start from for maintenance. I know we can't replace everything but many of the parts are pretty affordable on the Detroits & belts & hoses are going to give it up some time. So why not do them in the drive instead of the middle of a trip? Thermostat Change Out Project & It's Growing
When i first bought my PT, the alternator belts went south- on the freeway. I
called up Bob loomas- he asked if I could start the generator and to just not worry about it till I got home. I have just 2 belts on my coach. A/C compressor has been removed. Kevin,
Can you imagine the value the knowledge Curt will eventually bring to the forum by performing these feats of mechanical adventure? I mean beyond the party favor planning events, which he has excelled at thus far? Please don't discourage our probe and research engineers In the meantime, we mighta missed the fix'n season again ouselves.... Well, it's gett'n warm up here, things are start'n to move around...... Mosquito's are bit'n and it's close to time to head out towards the the boutiful pleasures of the road again, where the beautiful folk reside. It's just one of those benefits about having 14 heaters and one becomes a problem eh? You can miss one or two fix'n seasons in a row, without degradation to the "Go RV'n experience" in an old Bird. Anyone got a link to those good bandaids? Ron, think'n my my resale value is growing by the inches.... 85pt36 And may this be your best President's Day ever! --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, krminyl@... wrote: > > In regards to Curt's current "project", > > Good work, Curt!!! > > Kevin McKeown > Yorba Linda, CA (across the 91 fwy from Curt's Place) > 1986 38' PT > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
