Generator control board, LXi
Folks,
I notice that my generator comes on way too soon and stays on way too long. I poked around a bit a found that the radio shack power supply powering the generator control board was bad, so I replaced it. In the process I found that the basement receptacle that the power supply was plugged into is not powered by any of my inverters. It's only powered by shore power. This seems odd. Why would the generator control board only want power when I'm connected to the shore. It seems to me that regardless of shore power, the generator control board should be powered all the time. The control board is in the basement compartment on the drivers side of the coach and directly behind the front wheel. Is my receptacle wired screwy? Generator control board, LXi
Hi David,
The autostart generator in my LXi works on either "Low AC / Low Battery" or on "No AC". I was under the impression that the outlet served as a AC voltage sense point too. Therefore, if it was on the inverter, it would not sense that the shore power was out. I'll have to get into the circuit to actually see whats up. It is one of those things that has always worked and I've never had to check. Yours, being newer, may be different but if mine starts on "no AC", it will run until AC is restored. If starting because of low batteries, it will run 2 hours and check again. 2 more will be added if batteries are still low. I've never had a situation where it started because of "Low AC Voltage" and only believe it does because of conversations with the factory. One other note; the Radio Shack power supply on mine is an adjustable output voltage model. Was yours? Did it somehow get set to the wrong voltage for the board? Rich D. Generator control board, LXi
Thanks Rich,
Your email makes complete sense. I also found more info at http://www.westhaverassociates.com/gencon/FAQ.asp It seems that the only use for the radio shack AC adapter is to monitor shore power, hence, when shore power disappears, the voltage from the adapter goes to zero. I also spoke to Larry Westhaver and learned that BB installed an incorrect AC adapter. He said that the universal, multi-voltage adapter, is not suited for his gen ctrl board. The universal adapter provides regulated power which does not allow the ctrl bd to detect brown-out conditions. On his web site he specifies radio shack part numbers for fixed voltage adapters which do not provide so much voltage regulation.
