91sp Onan genset and Battery Chargers
Forum member CurtS and I visited another member Tiger to help fix his
bus. Curt, a very organized person prompted Tiger to make a list of issues that needed attention. We divided up the list and while I cut the grass; Washed the dog, Porsche and windows, Curt worked on the bus. Tiger, a renowned area chef, made us breakfast. Shortly after finishing my Chereoos I got to work helping Curt fix the tail lights on the bus. Tiger, a renowned area chef made parts runs to Nappa Auto parts for supplies like a 1/2 inch wrench and at noon he went to Burger King to pick us up some lunch. We have some questions about repair items and would appreciate any input::: ONAN GENSET For some reason the onan genset on Tigers bus shuts down the fuel open selonoid just after the engine starts. Tiger had the selonoid replaced 3 times and claims the same symptom reappears each failure. I was able to start the genset by holding the shut off open and quickly removing the + terminal once it started. If I first removed the terminal and held the fuel open it would not even crank over. We allowed it to generate ac/110 but 12v never reappeared at the fuel shutoff to keep it open. (I did not try to reset the fault switch after 110 appears to see if 12 V keeps the fuel open) BATTERY CHARGERS I need info on hooking up retrofit progressive dynamic chargers 60 amp and removing the old OEM chargers. One new charger is hooked up directly to the output + and - as the OEM charger which was removed. the output + routs up to a relay and then down to a shunt on the wall of the forward charger compartment. with the charger plugged in the output at the charger was 14 V and the new batteries read 2.3 V. It seems nothing was getting past the relay??. we ran a jumper cable from the output+ then to the house batteries+. with this hookup we were able to fully charge the batteries at both banks. ??What is the relay for and is it necessary to use with a new PD charger system? can I bypass it without damaging some component it protects? ?? why was I able to charge the cat start batteries with the charger hooked up to the House battery bank?? I thought the two banks were independent and that is why a momentary switch was necessary to tie them together when extra amps were needed to make a start. Gregory O'Connor 94ptRomolandCa |
