Hello all, I’m Will. Thank you for this group, for being so willing to give of your knowledge, for being the Wanderlodge gurus!
I’ve put down a deposit on a 1979. (A real beauty of a black Bluebird on the outside, a heretofore rodent sanctuary on the inside.) It was abandoned to a storage lot, lot owner is selling, knows little about it but is a most helpful to an out-of-stater and sent me pics of identifiers on bus.
The main question, at the moment, is: diesel or gas engine? I’m trying to line up a local mechanic to change fluids and then attempt to start. I presently don’t know whether to seek a diesel or gasoline mechanic.
Body # F44454
Engine Serial# 32Y2574
Vin 3262411ND
Chassis Serial# 1 227
If anyone can identify Ford or Cat from that information, I’d be much obliged. (I did spend about 40 minutes in Google searches attempting to associate meaning with these identifiers, without success).
This space said, “Don’t know what to buy— post your questions here”. In my case it’s, Don’t know what I’ve bought!?
Many thanks and best regards.

Greetings:

I'm looking to purchase a motor home in the next year so I'm trying to get educated. I've been lurking on some Wanderlodge sites and forums for a few months. I've always been partial to the Wanderlodge. My father came close to buying one back in the early 1980's. That impression of the fine build quality and craftsmanship has never left me. Now, I'm looking to retire, buy an RV and Wanderlodge is at the top of my list.

Questions:

1. Can you compare Wanderlodge ownership to the classic car hobby? It seems that the Wanderlodge has a cult following. There is an air of mystery associated with any Bird. I compare it to showing up at a classic car meet and a guy pulls up with a Packard, a Duesenberg or a Tucker--or some other automobile that is rarely seen but highly revered. The other car guys look on with awe and amazement. Is this a correct assumption?

2. How hard is it locate parts for the drive train and chassis?

3. Could I expect a well maintained Bird to be reliable and relatively trouble free? I realize that I would be looking at a twenty to thirty year old Bird and things wear out, need to be replaced, etc. Motor homes need attention and maintenance--similar to owning a boat or an aircraft.

I thank you all in advance for your replies.

This may seem like an odd question but, from what I hear, the Wanderlodge.s (36) has a longer hang after the rear tires which tends towards a wider swing on turns and not as stable handling on the road and in wind where the 4106 at 35' seems to not have the same issues. Also is the 3208 Thursday with ZF tyranny enough power for that bus? We will be doing a lot of mountains. Thanks for the help.

I'm hoping to hit the road in year, full time in a vintage Wanderlodge. I'll be seeing the Country and rock hunting in between. Last year I started looking at the BB's and WOW... so many gorgeous vintage buses! I think I don't want one longer than 32' so I can get into all the BLM camping areas. I think FC's are out because they don't seem to have much power and it appears the engines/trany's can be a problem, or at least a big maintenance issue. I'm handy, but I'm no mechanic, so I'd like to find a vintage bus that everyone can work on. I'm drawn to 2 axle buses because I read they handle great in terms of taking turns, etc.

As far as the interior goes, I don't really care so much about what kind of bed, where it is or if it has a built-in blender and coffee maker, etc. I'm more interested in the engine, transmission, brakes and all the other mechanical things that effect reliability. Being on my own makes this a priority for me.

I just can't get past the look of the vintage 70's and 80's buses, maybe to early 90's. They are absolutely beautiful. I'd love to adopt one, if I knew which one to adopt!

Any advice, opinions would be very, very welcome! I am out of my element here! One year of reading about Wanderlodges does not an expert make!

Thanks...

Thanks...
