air spring pricing
Front 8997- $85.02
Drive 9039- $79.80
Tag 9073- $113.85 This is Firestone pricing.

Front 8997- $83.75
Drive 9039- $77.72 This is Goodyears pricing. They do not cross
the tag air spring.
The pricing could get even greater with a larger order.

Checked my air spring numbers per doc. in blue-box. Front 8992, Drive,
9039, Tag 9073.
Is the front #8997 air spring the same as the #8992?

How does one know the age of an air spring. Coming off the shelf the bag
is called new because it has never been installed. In reality it could
be 10 years old. Is there a date code like tires?

Curt,

According to recent discussion on the old forum, this is what was
stated: Firestone part #W01-358-8997, is essentially the same as the
standard W01-358-8992. The bag ending in 7 has the mounting bolts 3/8"
longer than the bag ending in 2.

As several people later stated, the longer mounting bolts are a good
thing (as Martha Stewart would say).

Longer studs are not a good thing. The fit is tight and you have to clear the
studs when R&Ring the bags. Too tall of stud, she don't get installed, with out
cutting off and they are hard.

Thanks for the clarification on stud lengths Mike. You're absolutely
right -- too long a stud would be bad. However, what I thought I
remembered was that the longer 8997 was the correct one for my coach.
The stud length difference as I remembered it was only about 3/8",
which I admit could be a lot in a tight fit.

I freely admit I was going from memory on that comment, and with
memory being what it is, out of curiousity I scanned the old archives
real quickly and found, among several others, that Ralph had said in
post 35712: "my manual lists the 8997 rather than the 8992.
Apparently, either air spring will work on the front." In 19057, he
noted: "The 3/4 inch nut on the Coach is only a 1/2 thickness nut. I
put a full thickness nut back on it so in the future I can get a
wrench on it!"

John Peatross noted in post 45144:
"Front air bags are the same for both FC & PT at least
thru 1987. Bluebird part number is 1263581.
My Ridewell suspension drawing shows the Ridewell part
number as 100-358-8992C, this is Firestone part number
W01-358-8992. Firestone bus catalog cross references
B/B 1263581 to W01-358-8997 but this is Ridewell 100-358-8997C.

What this means is that there are actually two part
numbers that fit, Firestone W01-358-8992 and
W01-358-8997. The only difference is the length of the
bottom stud. 8992 has a 0.65" stud length, and 8997
has a 1.00" stud length.

My '87 PT40 has the 8992 with the short stud. The nut
just fits flush with the end of the stud. The short
stud version is slightly easier to install, and would
be less suseptable to corrosion and damage as there is
nothing hanging out below the nut. Can't imagine the
extra 0.35" of the 8997 would ever be a problem
though." It is not clear if John had the 1/2 thickness
nuts or not.

In any event, based on several other posts, it looks like the slightly
longer 8997 is the proper one for my Bird. Since I carry one of each
as a spare, Murphy's Law says I'll probably never need to change one
anyway.

Uh, Ok. More information than I need but if a stud needs to be altered, a air
powered cut off tool is the way. A thread file is nice to fix the ends so one
can start the nuts again. It is a real treat to get all the fittings alined and
retorqued, that's why I did up all 8, hope they stay inflated. Roads are rough
up here in the land of 4 seasons.
