8V92 Turbo Boost - Mike McMahan - 04-29-2005 08:25

I was reading the post on the turbo boost issue. I have thought for a
while that my coach was a little down on power. I drove it today and
the max boost I could get was 15lbs with pyrometer readings of 600.
Any ideas that I shouod check before taking it somewhere. Thanks,

It's not getting enough fuel. Fuel filters? Did it ever show more boost and egt?
If not bigger injector nozzles will do wonders for power and fuel consumption,
not in a good way for the consumption.

Mike It seems like it used to have more boost. The fuel filters
are fairly new with the racor gauge not indicating a problem.
Thanks for the reply and help. Mike McMahan 1989 PT40

Mike: You are about 9 pounds shy of max boost. I would check for
leaks in the exhaust manifold and boost pipes to the turbo. Are you
blowing a lot of black smoke? If you are, that would indicate a loss
of boost as a result of a leak. You might also remove the intake
filter and check the vanes on the turbo and without the engine
running. Spin the turbo to make sure it turns freely. Beyond that,
it will take someone smarter than me.

I have the same problem, maximum boost is 15 pounds. I have a good
diesel mechanic coming over to look at the engine next week when I
get back for New Mexico. His opinion is the injectors may not have
been set correctly, the exhaust expansion joint is leaking, or the
turbo has gone bad. I have checked the fuel pressure and it is ok. I
will let you know what I find out when we finally figure it out.

8V92 Turbo Boost - Jeff Miller - 04-30-2005 15:11

Fuel filters, air filter, exhaust leaks and restriction, intake stack
restriction. Further, your DDEC II system might be limiting power
based on sensor input, might be worth having a DD dealer check it if
you can't find anything obvious.

Look also to make sure the throttle is traveling to the stop when
floored.

check exhaust manifolds and pipes for cracks, and check the rubber hoses between
the turbo and the engine for cracks or loose clamps.randy
