Power that stays cool - The Whistleworks - 07-24-2005 02:47

Thanks, Mike. I was told that SPs delivered more useful torque because of not
having the long driveshaft. I'm glad to hear of your positive experience with
the FCs. They seem to provide more bang for the buck, as it were. JOHN B

You'll be OK with 300hp FC. I wouldn't want to use a SP for mountain
climbing, all it can do to pull its self.
Make sure the cooling system is in excellent shape, hoses, belts thermostats
and water pump. The fuel system is another area of potential trouble,
particularly the pusher pump
located just ahead of the rear axle on the curb side.
If you mechanically challenged, consider a new unit with a warrantee, not a
jab just a fact. Wanderlodge can be a major money pit if you have to hire out
all work needed.
I have pulled as much as 48,000# total gvw with a 3208 powered vehicle and
10,000# with my FC 250 hp. Got 6 mpg and went kinda slow on the hills.

I'm looking for anyone who has had experience pulling a large vehicle
(5500#) behind an FC35 with the 300HP Cat and 5spd tranny in terrain
ranging from 3-8000' at summer temperatures. I have found a nice
looking 1988 FC and don't know how if it can do the job. Are the SPs
more efficient? I've heard the Cats are more fuel efficient, and the
cost is lower, would be the reason I ask.

I was told SP delivers more useable torque because of short driveshaft, I think
they weigh about the same, have you had experience towing in an FC? John B

Why would a 34,00lb SP with 300hp be any different on hills than a FC
with 300hp, does the FC weigh less?

By the way, what is the pusher pump's function? Are they problematic in any
particular year model? I'm interested in an 88 FC35.

Power that stays cool - Ralph L. Fullenwider - 07-27-2005 03:20

John:

When I had my service trailer, it weighed 11000 pound loaded with tools and
with the Jeep GC in it as well. My '85FC with the 250 T pulled it nicely
on the flats but really slowed on the hills. In truth, it was a little too
much for the 250 T in the hills on grades. The 300 with the 5 spd would not
have had a problem with that weight. I made grades like the Grapevine at a
whopping 15 to 20 mph and she got warm but not overly.

Good luck
