Considering the age of the original unit, it will most certainly be
more cost effective to simply replace it (assuming that the fault is
not a very minor thing). If you can't troubleshoot the problem
(broken switch? or worse?) even the cost of paying for
troubleshooting would make repair non-economic. Finally, finding
parts for a nearly 20 year old microwave/convection oven might be
impossible.

Basically, you're looking for an "over the stove" mounted microwave/
convection oven. Consumer's Reports is the primary place to get
objective quality and performance information about kitchen
appliances (and many other things). I'm afraid that I don't have my
CR annual buying guide with me -- but I recall that the Sharp brand
was fairly reliable.
