Has anyone changed their power steering fluid? My SP has close to 100K on it &
was wandering if it should be changed. If it should can I do it myself? I do as
much of my own maintenance as I can. Are there any hoses that should be changed.
Should you just use power steering fluid? Where is the best place to drain it &
get it all out? Thanks Don

Changed mine with synthetic PS fluid a couple years ago. Best move I've made
with the steering system! Had to search it up on line; the local suppliers
didn't have anything. Turned out to be well worth the effort.

Thanks Bob,  Did you drain the fluid from the power steering pump. My pump is in the rear & I was wandering how you would get all the fluid out if it wouldn't drain out.thats a long line clear to the front.    Don

I rigged up a hose and temporary external resevoir to feed the pump. The return
line from the steering box (which normally feeds the pump) went into a bucket.
When the fluid going into the bucket changed color, I was done.

This would all happen at the rear of the bus on the SP. It took 3 quarts for
the FC; figure at least a couple extra quarts for the SP.

The synthetic fluid came from http://www.redlineoil.com (707) 745-6100. It made the
steering system quieter and it has more steering power.

FYI...I used REDLINE in everything............engine, trans, differential, pw steering and even in the radiator. They make a product called WATER WETTER which will lower the water temp about 15 degrees. I called them and they said it takes the oxygen out of the water.

Important! I forgot to include this part: When its all set up, you start the
engine to pump out the old fluid and pump the new fluid in. If you let it run
too long, all your expensive new synthetic will end up in the bucket. If you
don't have a stop/start station for the engine at the back, you need somebody in
the driver's seat who can shut it down when you signal. It doesn't take very
long!
