There was a thread on this some time back about a speedo replacement from
Stephen B. I ordered one as well and had no problem in figuring the math
and programming the new speedo. What I did have a problem with was an extra
wire coming from the back of the unit, one was grey and the other blue. The
grey powers the hot side of the magnetic sensor, I took the blue to be a
ground and was wrong about the blue, removed it out of the circuit and the
speedo worked very well.

I found some calculations on line for the programming. my tires rotate 502
times per mile and that times 60 teeth on the BB drive drum times the
constant give you the ones and 10's binary switch positions and using the
sum of that equation plugged into a second constant give you the hz rate
figure to set the switches up with. Speedo is good and replaces the
original exactly. Thanks Steve

Didn't know Stephen had speedos for sale.
If I can get one, can you help me set up mine also??

The hardest part is going on line to the tire manufacture and find the tire
specs for your drive tires. Your looking for how many revolutions your drive
tire makes in 1 mile. The rest falls into line.

The Michelin site shows the RPMs per tire size...don't know about the other tire manufactures.

Hi Curt:

Most tire manufactures will have the diameter of their product and will convert that to per mile revs. I run 11 R 22.5 kumoho and the spec is 502 revs per mile. The Mich same size tire turns 501 per mile. As a for instance.

We all run the magnetic pick up that counts the notches on the inside of the break drum. The count for the notches on Birds are 60. And most of the Birds speedometer face value is 0 to 85 mph and with the Teleflex the constant for the 0 to 85 gauge is 0.0236.

So step one of finding the binary switch set up starts with

501 x 60 x 0.0236 = 710.832
This number is the HZ rate

Now we take the HZ rate number and divide it by 23.61, which is the constant for the divide number and will give the binary number that is set up on the program switches in the unit.

710.832 ÃÂ· 23.61 = 30.107. Or rounded up or down to the nearest whole number is 30 and 30 is the binary number for my system.

Now we know the binary divide number and the HZ rate and that let's us program the switches.

Note that there is a math error in the top line below, but it does not affect
the rounded end result.

However, multiplying by 0.0236 and dividing by 23.61 is funtionally the same as
dividing by 1000, so
501 x 60 / 1000 = 30.06 which is close enough to the 30.047 that using .0236 and
23.61 would give.

The last magnetic pick up or Proximity switch, same thing, that I replaced
was on a '95 Bird, so I know it was there up to that year model and I do
not know about further years.

Another thing that I know, the math that I reported on to set the simple
binary switches up for the divide number and the Hertz rate worked. So why
confuse with mumbo jumbo of equation changes from a known good formula
written for the Teleflex gauge. My install and use of the programming from
the web site I published to anyone needing it, worked very well without
your change.

I always try to simplify formulas where possible. I suspect it was the sheer
number of decimals used that lead to your making the math error in that top line
- when you make an error that affects 5 of the 6 digits you are fortunate that
rounding got you to the right answer.

The teleflex document is of necessity a complex one, because of the many
different speedometers involved. It just happens that OUR 85MPH speedometer is
the one where the .0236 and 23.61 can be cancelled into a simple 1/1000.

Thanks for the info on the pickup - I had thought that it might be coming from
the DDEC on mine; internally my DDEC II stopped recording miles (but still has
MPH) a few years ago.
