Hello all,
Does anyone have a diagram of the AC wiring for a 1987 FC 35 side bath coach. I
need to follow from both gen and 30&50amp line in to to 50 amp breaker then to
selector switch and finally to distribution circuit breaker box. I am thinking
of adding a Magnum Energy MS series 2000 watt pure sine wave unit and need to
review coach wiring. Any thoughts would also be appreciated.

Hi Robert and Dianne.

This is just one guy's opinion, but I think a 2K inverter is better installed by
adding a small two breaker sub panel after the main AC panel. Then put 2 20 amp
breakers in the sub panel and pick 2 useful circuits in the main panel and move
them to the sub panel breakers. For example, use the galley and front salon
circuits or whatever works best the way you use the coach.

If you wire the inverter into the whole coach, every time you turn the inverter
on you must run around turning everything off that shouldn't get powered by the
inverter - like the battery charger (duh! Smile, the water heater, and whatever
else you have that you don't want running on battery power. Also, it takes very
little to overload the inverter and require a reset when the whole coach is
wired in.

In addition, I had to do just a bit of re-wiring to get the right stuff on the
inverter circuits. Fortunately BB makes this fairly easy with all the junction
boxes they used wiring the bus. Be sure to document the changes you make.

Also check the "Attachments" on the forum home page menu list on the left. Curt Sprenger added a whole bunch of 87 wiring diagrams as attachments and the inverter circuit is one of them. He has a PT, but the wiring concept is the same.

Guess I should have added that a 30 amp breaker replaces one of the now-unused
20 amp breakers in the main panel. The 30 amp feeds the inverter by #10 cable,
and then the inverter output feeds the sub-panel by another run of #10 cable.

This scheme requires an inverter with built-in transfer switch, which is the
best way to fly anyway.

Does your unit have an existing inverter? On my 88FC I simply took out the
factory unit and installed the new unit. No changes to any wiring. Unfortunately
BB did not provide many outlets that run off the inverter.

BB had the right idea when they put only selected circuits on the inverter. The
catch is whether the "selected circuits" are the most useful for the owner of
the rig. This can all be modified, however.

Bruce,can I ask what inverter you used that required no changes to any wiring?

Ray: I forget the name of the inverter. They are long out of business but I
think they were made in MN. Not something I wamted to keep. I just trashed it.
It was in the LF storage bay. I cut the 12 volt cables, put ends on them and
attached to the Xantrex. I used the original 110 wiring that goes to the power
panel. Because the new inverter was also a charger I had to extend the 110
source from the next storage bay. Was an easy install. I chose that area for
mounting as you can bury it right to the front close to the batteries. As I said
I wish it powered more outlets. I also scrapped the battery boiler. Lots of
copper (more like gold).

Ray: I misunderstood your question. Do not know why. I used a Xantrex 1500.
Bought it from some outfit in Florida that gets factory refurbed units. Found
them online. I might still have the receipt but they sell lots of inverter and
solar stuff. Maybe Sun Solar??

Sorry so long in reply. Had death in family. I took the inverter out years ago.
Wiring is still in place.
