Howdy.
<b style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">Right now we are at the East Fork COE park at Lake Lavon, near Wylie, TX.
We are having real problems with the Bird. The Check Engine light and the Test Engine lights come on and a buzzer buzzes. The engine loses power, kinda stumbles for about 4 seconds. Then it recovers and goes on as normal. We thought that this was caused by the coolant level sensor which was dying. Jack replaced that sensor but it didn't solve this problem. One other thing is the tach. The tach needle will wander then settle down, then wander again. We want to get the coach down to Clyde in Seguin, TX, BUT I am really worried that we might get stranded on the side of a road. Suggestions, ideas for a solution would be most welcomed.

Check the codes on the engine - hold down the engine test button, and count the
flashes, which will be in sets of two. There may be several codes, hold it down
until it repeats and record all codes. Tell us what you get.

Hi Jack & Liz,
Call your mechanic and ask him if he knows a reputable Mobile Mechanic to check on the problem.
If that's not possible tow her in on a low profile flat bed trailer, Cheaper than a new motor.

OK, here is what they mean:
13 Coolant Level Low Voltage
16 Coolant Level High Voltage
24 Fuel Temperature Voltage Low
36 Oil Pressure Sensor Volatge Low
43 Low Coolant for 7 seconds. Will also trigger Stop Engine
44 Oil or Coolant over temperature. Will also trigger Stop Engine
46 Low Battery Voltage for more than 30 seconds
53 EEPROM memory failure (internal DDEC)
Note that these are historical codes and they do not tell you when they
occurred. Whenever I find that I have any codes (they can be spurious) I get
them cleared. "No Codes" is a 25

Sounds like 53 alone would cover all bases with low voltage. This has been a
bane of DDEC since the dawn of time. Corroded pins on a molex plug? Intermittent
connectors from the voltage source. Bad batteries dirty connections. And on and
on.

I agree. I run VMSPc, and one of the things it shows me is the voltage the DDEC
is seeing. I was amazed at how much it jumped around, and how low it would go
(11 to 13.4 was the range I initially saw). My dash gauge was steady in the high
13 range.
Cleaning grounds helped, and I got the most stability when I added a heavy
jumper from the ground side of the batteries to a bolt on the engine itself. I
still see steady swings in the DDEC voltage, but now it is 12.8-13.4, roughly.
