Does it have an anode rod? If so, that's probably corroded, and has been doing its job.

Liz, you are going to have to run a LOT of water thru that unit. I know whenever Brenda wants to use ours, I really have to run lots of water thru it.

One potential source of the smell is Hydrogen Sulfide which is often found in well water. The smell is exacerbated by heat. Hydrogen Sulfide (rotten egg smell) comes from ancient decaying plant material deep within the layers of earth. It will 'gas off' and is not harmful, but it stinks.

Therefore, if you hooked to a new water source, or filled your water tank from a water source that originates from a well, that could be your problem. One way of determining if it is the water is to take a sample from another point (i.e., not the InstaHot) and immediately smell the container of water. To confirm if the heat is drawing it out, put it in a covered pan before it 'gasses off' and heat it up, open the lid and take a whiff.

Thanks for all of the replies to our question. No, no anode rod in this
water heater. Makes no difference what the water source is, the InstaHOT
heated water is smelly. I think that Ernie is right. I will need to run
a lot of water through it. I'll try that.

Thanks again,

Jack & Liz: The instahot on my bird seems to work fine and the water does not
smell, but it does taste bad. I have used it one time and found that it was not
hot enough to suit my needs, i.e. chocolate, instant grits,(for those of us from
the South) oatmeal, etc. I found its just as easy to heat the water I need in a
pyrex cup and get it as hot as I want it. The device looks good and impresses
folks, but is not very practical. I'd just soon replace it with a soap dispenser
or something.
