My SP has 2 PD9155's(55 amps each). They don't charge batterys high
enough(11-11.5v). If I replace them do I need 2 or can I get one that is 80amps.
Do most coaches have 2 chargers/converters? I have a sw in the shore power door
that is labled HIand LO.I understand that it selects one(LO)or both(hi).Does
everybody have this sw? And where do you leave the sw positioned? How many AMPS
do I need for a charger/conveter?
Thanks for any help

Ed,

Details, details.... which make and model did you get? $200 for a 'new' 80A converter/charger seems like pretty good deal, given what I remember for prices on the TrueCharge 40 models.

A pair of charger conveerters is like only having one arm. Better than no arms. The older or more modern units have only one function. They make a set voltage and they do it for ever. some can be set. Check your battery manufacturer and set the converter for the EXACT float voltage within .1 volts. Thats point one or you will slowly roast the batteries if you go overboard. .1 under is better life wise than .1 over. You only loose dry camp capacity if you are under and you bake the plates when you go over. It matters not if they are wet, agm, or gel. Leave the equalize charging to your engine alternator, or one of those cutsie little smart chargers that really have no brains anyway. The equalizing or refreshing charge as the big bank guys call it today is less of an issue in agm and gel.
That was a sulphation issue with wet cells. I have a pair of 65A switching supply precision DC supplies set to I forget what but it is about .2V under ideal and my precious Sonnenschein monster cells will live a lifetime.

P.S.
The Amperage of the charger is irrelevant unless you,
A, run everything in the bus at once
B, need to charge the snot out of the batteries for the first 10 minutes.
After the first 10 or 15 minutes of wicked inrush current, the batteries will float up enough to drop the rate dramatically soo the higher Amperage chargers only live longer due to less stress and really have nothing to do with the charge rate of the batteries unless it is one of those stupid automotive chargers set to roast which is actually charging at 16 or more volts which burns up the plates, all your electronics, and makes the little meter dance the watusi.

Don't get lulled in to any notion that a charger is smart.
The only real brains in a charger determine the temperature and nothing else. Changes in temperature need to change the float charge voltage by .01 Volt increments. Yup, point zero one at a time per degree F. Other than this, a smart charger really doesn't exist. I know this is a dissapointment to many people but oh well. that is why my system is set up with two precision converters and I leave the equalize part to the engine alternator. The worst issue with smart temperature corrected chargers is that EVERY battery has a different curve of float voltage change. Sure there are rules and guidelines but how does the charger know what your battery is? Colder is higher Voltage. Hotter is lower Voltage. As little at .3 volts over the line and you can have
coffee from the boiling.
