Does anyone have any comments good or bad concerning the Black Hills area, Mt
Rushmore, etc as a vacation destination? Any suggestions on where to stay, what
not to miss? Family is looking at traveling to the area starting August 13th.

The Sturgis Bike Rally is August 9th - 15th in Sturgis, SD, near the Black Hills. It will be very busy in the Black Hills area at that time.

Alvie,

We enjoyed Hot Springs for a day or two before going up to Mt Rushmore. Great local dining and a few attractions.

If you choose toaccess Mt. Rushmore throughCuster State Park to see the bison, it's astunning drivebut it is miles of two-lane switchbacks and three one-lane tunnels. You'll be busy.

Unfortunately, our electric radiator fan on our 84 FC was not working properly and we overheated and had to be towed up and over the mountain into Rapid City.

I'll have to go back and see it under other circumstances someday.

We are in the Black Hills right now -- and it is beautiful!!  Sturgis Rally is the first week of August -- every year but there are still places to camp.  We are outside of Rapid City at Hart Ranch--wonderful RV Resort.  There are also some very nice campgrounds by Custer -- both in the park as well as privately owned ones outside the park.  If you have a toad,  it is much easier to get around but we have seen people all over the roads with the big RV's. Well worth a visit -- but then we are prejudiced.  We are from here!  There are all kinds of outdoor stuff to do -- hiking, biking, picnicking, driving to just experience the beauty.  Being lazy and doing nothing in beautiful surroundings.  As well as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the mammouth sites in Hot Springs, the Badlands--just to name a few.

We will be gone in August to do the relative hop before heading to NC for the fall.  Wish we would be here to show you around.

Check out the Hart Ranch. Not that far out of town. You do have to listen to there sales pitch. We were there a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

Alvie and Elsie,

I just returned last year from a trip in my RV to Alaska and I must say the best part of the trip which covered over 2 months, was on my return through the Black Hills area. You have Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, Devils Tower, Rapid City, South Dakota and tons of beautiful country and not too far away is Yosemite. I really enjoyed that area and intend to go back and catch up on the things that I missed. You won't regret going there.

I was there last year during the Sturgis Bike Rally and the crowds weren't that bad. We encountered some lines at restaurants but not too bad a wait. Evenings seemed to be more of a crowd problem than during the day.

Hi Alvie and Elsie,
One more voice heard from regarding Black Hills vacation.
Patti and I are currently workampingat the D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, SD. We have been here since mid May and can tell you there is plenty to do see in the area. Within a 100 miles there is Devils Tower, WY, Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead, Rapid City, Rushmore, CusterPark, Crazy Horse Monument, 1880 Steam Train ride. In addition to the museums and other sites there is the incredible Spearfish Canyon which features some of the best trout fishing in the country.
We work 3 days on and 3 days off and still haven't seen everything. Weather is much as you would expect in summer in the upper mid-west. Today and for the next several days we expect 90's then cooler weather this weekend. There are abundant camp grounds including the city park we are in at Spearfish. Full hook-up with water, sewer and 50 amp.
I don't think that you wont be disappointed if you come here. It is the most beautiful part of SD.
