I was working on the records on a fleet with mostly Cummins and I noticed
horsepower output ratings differ by major amounts 330 -415hp
depending on the use of cruise control. when cruise is used the hp was the
higher rate. These were 2003 to 2006 units with manual transmissions. I wonder
if the newer configurations unleash power like this.

If you look at this picture from last fall at the factory:
http://www.arcatapet.net/travel/images/v...G_6356.jpg all are Cummins
ISX, but the ones with red covers are 450HP and the ones with chrome are 600HP.
The former for transit busses, and the latter for Wanderlodges. I suspect they
were also without and with cruise controls because of application, but I suspect
there is no cause/effect relationship between cruise and power.

The computer now sets the horsepower available. The trucks I worked have the
computer set to deliver more horsepower to the rig when the cruise is enabled.
With the cruise off they max out at 330. I'm thinking the computer trust the
cruise more than the operator. The hp rating for the trucks were 415.

With the max hp rating of 600, I wonder the conditions are that it gives 600
horses to the operator.
