Fred,
Looks just like your picture only the socket has a ground and a positive lead.
Hadn't thought about license plate lights, but that makes sense. Could probably
find one of those at local NAPA store.
Thanks, Eric

Eric,
I recently replaced those aisle lights in our 83 FC 35 with LEDs. They work
great, no heat, very little power consumption... a couple watts maybe.. you can
leave on all night if you want to.
I recall one or two of the old ones came out real hard. I lubed them with some
aerosol electric contact lube and they finally came out.
I will try to post a part # and source for the LEDs.

Those lights were originally Signal Stat Chrome License plate lights #430W, 12
volt.
I found them (different manufacturer) at e-trailer.com Snap-in License Snap-In
License Plate, Utility or Dash Light - Chrome Plated
1-1/2" Diam x 2" L; Chrome-plated housing; replaceable bulb; snaps into required
1-1/4" mounting hole; 1-wire; 1-bulb incandescent

Hi Eric
The second wire can be attached to the base if you can only find a self grounding lamp.

a small led may work well and draw less

Bill,
I like the LED idea. I found replacement single wire bulb fixtures at local
NAPA and will work simple fix to ground the mounting plate. Did the LEDs put
out enough light?
On the subject of LED lights, I've been thinking of replacing the existing
fluorescent lights behind the overhead bins with rope lights or some LED panels.
Tired of messing with the unreliable fluorescents. Has anyone tried this kind
of replacement?

Eric,
The LED aisle lights I used are plenty bright no issuer there.
Regarding the fluorescent lights behind the cabinets: I did an experiment last
year with the rear curbside one and replaced it with two 12-lamp, 12-volt hockey
puck style LEDs I got at Home Depot. I installed these between the aluminum
reflector and the plastic lens. Its not quite enough. I think three would be
ok, That would be 36 bulbs and 50 probably better. Within the past year the
LEDs have gotten better and cheeper but still not quite ready for prime time in
my opinion.
We also experimented with the reading swivel head reading lamps while at
Quartzsite in January. There were a number of different vendors selling these in
different configurations from about $9 to $30 each. We tryed 4 or 5 different
bulbs. The expensive ones seem to hold up. The inexpensive ones don't. Some of
the middle priced ones were just OK but tend to flicker. It seems voltage
regulation is an issue. LEDs are getting better and cheeper all the time. I give
them another year and should be reliable and affordable.
Sam's is now selling LEDs with Edison bases. Using some on the garage dawn to
dusk. So far, so good.
